Anastacia, the sassy lady with one of the biggest voices in pop, had released three albums since 2000, and with the most recent self-titled CD being her most successful (and only number one to date), the time was right to sum up her career so far with a greatest-hits package called Pieces of a Dream, released for the 2005 Christmas market…

The volume is dedicated to AA. Kirillov and emerged from an international con ference which was held in Luminy, Marseille, in December 2000, on the occasion 6 of Alexandre Alexandrovitch's 2 th birthday. The conference was devoted to the orbit method in representation theory, an important subject that influenced the de velopment of mathematics in the second half of the XXth century. Among the famous names related to this branch of mathematics, the name of AA Kirillov certainly holds a distinguished place, as the inventor and founder of the orbit method. The research articles in this volume are an outgrowth of the Kirillov Fest and they illustrate the most recent achievements in the orbit method and other areas closely related to the scientific interests of AA Kirillov. The orbit method has come to mean a method for obtaining the representations of Lie groups. It was successfully applied by Kirillov to obtain the unitary rep resentation theory of nilpotent Lie groups, and at the end of this famous 1962 paper, it was suggested that the method may be applicable to other Lie groups as well. Over the years, the orbit method has helped to link harmonic analysis (the theory of unitary representations of Lie groups) with differential geometry (the symplectic geometry of homogeneous spaces). This theory reinvigorated many classical domains of mathematics, such as representation theory, integrable sys tems, complex algebraic geometry. It is now a useful and powerful tool in all of these areas.

There are some who say that this early 1966 masterpiece does Dylan's 'Highway 61' period better than the master himself, said Lenny Kaye of "A Public Execution" in the liner notes to the epochal Nuggets compilation album from 1972. In the small but fiercely contested kingdom of Dylan imitators Texas' Mouse & The Traps stand tallest due to Execution. It was only a medium-sized hit in the United States back in the 1960s but has become renowned the World over in the years since, as one of the best records of its kind. In truth, while Ronnie 'Mouse' Weiss and his gang of Texas buddies would never deny the influence of Dylan's classic folk-rock, A Public Execution - shaped into a Dylan cop more by the studio machinations of producer Robin Hood Brians than anything else - was merely one facet of a band that could cover all the bases.

For her 1984 follow-up, Cristina enlisted the production genius of Don Was, who brings to Cristina's vocals a musical backdrop every bit as bizarre and infectious as his own Ze Records project Was (Not Was). Forgoing the extended disco excursions of her debut, Cristina and Was instead created ten radio-ready pop songs, trying to outdo Madonna at her own game, perhaps. Along with originals penned by the singer herself in conjunction with Was, Doug Fieger (of The Kinks) and Robert Palmer (!), Cristina also performs distinctive covers of songs by Van Morrison, Prince and obscure country singer John Conlee.

Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards may seem like an unusual set upon which to make such a facetious judgment, given that the set is promoted as a collection of outtakes, leftovers, and rarities. But that's not quite true; for an artist like Waits, who has built his reputation on consistency and durability, it's somewhat appropriate to assess his value on the basis of his deep cuts. What's more, Orphans isn't really a career-spanning outtake collection at all, what with Tom going George Lucas on the proceedings and splicing in new songs and re-recordings. The end product, neatly compartmentalized into three style-segregated discs, is about as perfect a summary of Waits' appeal as can be found on the open market, a shadow greatest hits that offers testimony to his unique and diverse talents without recycling any of his album material.
