Daniël Wayenberg & Martin Oei - Chopin à deux: The Piano Concertos on two Erard Grand Pianos (2017)

Daniël Wayenberg & Martin Oei - Chopin à deux: The Piano Concertos on two Erard Grand Pianos
Classical | FLAC (tracks)+cue, artwork | 74:04 min | 286 MB
Label: Zefir Records | Tracks: 06 | Rls.date: 2017

For the first time on CD: the famous Chopin piano concertos, played on two authentic Erard grand piano’s. The master pianist Daniel Wayenberg, aged 87, normally prefers to perform on modern instruments. It is a small miracle the 20 year old Martin Oei managed to have him perform on original instruments from the era of Chopin. The transparent execution on two pianos elucidates new aspects of these well-known compositions. Close your eyes and imagine you are in Paris around 1830, when Chopin himself accompanied his most talented students when performing these concertos.

When Bill Evans agreed to do a two piano date with Bob Brookmeyer, eyebrows surely must have raised. Pairing a rising superstar of modern jazz with a gentleman known for playing valve trombone and arranging charts might have been deemed by some as a daunting task. Fortunately for the keyboardists, this was a good idea and a marvelous concept, where the two could use the concept of counterpoint and improvisation to an enjoyable means, much like a great chess match. For the listener, you are easily able to hear the difference between ostensible leader Evans in the right channel of the stereo separation, and the accompanist Brookmeyer in the left.

"After the widely noticed performance at the „Acht Brücken Festival 2016” at Cologne's Philharmonic Hall, Gregor Schwellenbach, Hauschka, Erol Sarp (of „Grandbrothers“), Daniel Brandt, Paul Frick (both of "Brandt Brauer Frick") and John Kameel Farah will be releasing their interpretation of Steve Reich’s "Six Pianos" as a studio recording via FILM. The re-recording of this piece is an interpretation of Reich’s composition but still far more than just that – it is a modern approach to his idea behind it. "Keyboard Study #1" by Terry Riley is a worthy b-side opposed to Reich’s composition. The piece is kind of a building set of ever lengthening, repetitive patterns played against each other with the right and left hand displaced. The composition proposes various possible combinations for the performer to choose from and repeat at will. And what the performers have chosen proves Gregor Schwellenbach’s assumption: "Especially Terry Riley’s and Steve Reich’s music are open doors for pianists socialized by pop music and their audience".

Simon Callaghan and Hiroaki Takenouchi met in 2003 and since then have had a thriving duo partnership. The two works by Sherwood presented on this disc were not published during the composer’s lifetime and are recorded here for the first time, using texts prepared and edited by Hiroaki Takenouchi from manuscripts held by the Bodleian Library. More ambitious than the Suite in terms of its scale and emotional range, the Sonata in C minor for two pianos was first performed by Sherwood and Hermann Scholtz on 27 April 1896. First performed in 1877, the Duo appeared in print in the same year as part of Breitkopf und Härtel’s high profile ‘Klavier-Bibliothek’ (‘Pianist’s Library’) series –the first edition of Parry’s music to be published abroad. Perhaps recognising the new opportunities that international recognition might bring. Despite inhabiting a quite different sound-world to Parry’s later choral works, the Duo therefore emerges as a pivotal work in his early career and musical development.
