Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale's influence on Clapton and many of today's artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ's legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for "Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale)". With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single "Call Me The Breeze".

Two artists had an enormous impact on Eric Clapton's music in the '70s: Delaney & Bonnie and J.J. Cale. Clapton joined Delaney & Bonnie's backing band after Cream dissolved, an experience that helped him ease away from the bombast of the power trio and into the blend of soul, blues, pop, and rock that defined his solo sound. Delaney Bramlett helped steer Clapton's eponymous 1970 solo debut, which not only came very close to replicating the sound of Delaney & Bonnie's records from that time, but also had a rollicking version of J.J. Cale's "After Midnight" that was Clapton's first solo hit.

Famous for his laid-back, ingrained style, J. J. Cale is best known for writing the songs "After Midnight" and "Cocaine," which later became hits when they were covered by Eric Clapton. But Cale's influence was not only manifested in songwriting, his distinctly hopping sense of rhythm and thumping boogie became the benchmark for the roots rock variety of Clapton and Mark Knopfler, among others. Cale's refusal to vary the sound of his music throughout his career earned him criticism and the label of "one-trick pony" (someone who has only one string to his bow), but he managed to develop a dedicated audience following the release of his sporadic albums.

This DVD is a must for any true JJ Cale fan. It contains almost 90 minutes of songs and even a personal look at JJ's modified Harmony guitar, complete with coins to set the distance between the strings and the neck.
He jams in classic laidback style and Leon Russell adds some tasty organ and even vocals on a couple tracks.
As good as any JJ I've heard, and I have them all. He's really in top form for this set and seeing him play with a great band adds to the full effect. The video is well edited and the camera work on a whole is pretty good.
