Jung Jae Il’s intensely personal new album translates his love of biblical psalm into music, acting as a spiritual salve for our turbulent times. Revisiting the rich string textures of his acclaimed Parasite and Squid Game soundtracks, the composer adds massed choir, a cappella vocal effects, and solo vocals, plus judiciously employed electronics. Overtones of Bach and Handel resonate through “memorare,” named after a prayer to the Virgin Mary. In dynamic contrast, the staccato synth-percussive effects heard in “his days are like a passing shadow II” strike a more experimental note. Throughout, Jung Jae Il conjures a compelling sense of mood, alternately despairing, hopeful, and apprehensive.

Most of César Franck’s works received scant attention at the time of their composition and Hulda was never performed in his lifetime. The narrative is set in 14th-century Norway at the time of the great tribal kings, with marauding hordes spreading fear and terror throughout the land. Hulda is kidnapped and transferred from one tribe to the other, her family is killed and she herself is humiliated.

The trumpet has had many concertos written for it by composers from the Soviet era and beyond. Appealing in its unabashed melodies and colourfully nostalgic feel, Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto became popular in the West, while Weinberg’s emotive Trumpet Concerto in B flat major was summed up by Shostakovich as a ‘symphony for trumpet and orchestra’. Shostakovich’s own playful Concerto No. 1, Op. 35 is recorded here with Timofei Dokschizer’s extended trumpet part, bringing it closer to the Baroque ‘double concerto’ model that the composer may initially have intended

This setting of Austrian Expressionist writer Georg Trakl’s poems by composer and conductor Fabrice Bollon is the first ever composition for classical singers and solo electric cello.

Otis Taylor is among the most mercurial of bluesmen. While his signature vocal phrasing and playing whether it be on guitar, mandolin, or banjo is rooted in several blues traditions his music almost never strictly conforms. Taylor's ability to morph his elliptical "trance blues" into any sound he pursues is beguiling. My World Is Gone is no exception. Its title refers to a comment made to him by Native American guitarist Mato Nanji of Indigenous after a concert. Nanji and his guitar are key players on about half the record. Most of these cuts address various issues in Native American history (from the Indian's side), especially the ill treatment of this first world people by the United States government and populace. Yet, in typical Taylor fashion, there are a couple of curveballs too.

Cellar Music Group is delighted to announce the release of The Artist, an introduction to the deeply-swinging world of bassist and multi-instrumentalist John Lee. Lee has become a first-call player on the Vancouver jazz scene, exuding an unerring swing-feel and a distinct tastefulness, radiating joy with his deeply soulful playing. The Artist stands as a document of Lee’s facility on the bass, and as a composer and arranger. The album captures the divine interplay of four masterful musicians, bassist John Lee, drummer Carl Allen, pianist Miles Black and tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds (featured on tracks 1, 7 & 8).

When red dirt pioneer Tom Skinner passed away his dying wish was that his Science Project band be continued. Skinner’s longtime performing partner multi-instrumentalist Don Morris took up the mantle to become the band leader. Filling out the group is guitarist Brad James, drummer Rick Gomez, & bassist Dylan Layton.

Issuing a string of Korean and U.S. Top Ten releases, the group debuted in 2015 with The Day, rising on the charts with subsequent EPs and a pair of 2017 full-lengths Sunrise and Moonrise. In addition to the Korean and North American markets, Day6 also focus on Japan, debuting there in 2018 with Unlock.
