Roxx Gang were a glam metal band formed in Largo, Florida in 1985.
They were fronted by Kevin Steele, who formed the band along with guitarist Eric Carrol. After going through several lineup changes, the band garnered record company attention in 1987 with their Love 'Em and Leave 'Em demo. The band recorded their debut album Things You've Never Done Before with their lineup now consisting of Steele, Jeff Taylor (guitar), Wade Hays (guitar), Roby "Strychnine" Strine (bass), and David James Blackshire (drums). EMERGENCY continues the trend begun on 1979's LADIES NIGHT and continued on albums like CELEBRATE! and IN THE HEART of pushing Kool & the Gang's sound deeper into the smooth grooves of Adult Contemporary R&B. Though the band had long since relinquished the hardcore funk on which it honed its chops, EMERGENCY proves Kool & the Gang still capable of moving bodies on the dance floor, as the thumping "Misled," the album's lead-off single, attests. The hard-driving vibe of the title track, and the almost Prince-like "Surrender," should be enough to assure old-school Gang fans that they've still got the funk.
Discussing Kool & the Gang in the early '70s, James Brown enthused, "They're the second-baddest out there … They make such bad records that you got to be careful when you play a new tape on the way home from the record store. Their groove is so strong you could wreck." And that really says it all. Kool & the Gang were funk's kings in 1975, and Spirit of the Boogie was the finest album they ever recorded – the staggering climax of their development thus far.
