Clary Fray (Lily Collins) ist ein normaler und vor allem nur durchschnittlich beliebter Teenager, doch nachdem sie erfahren muss das sie die Letzgeborene in einer überaus langen Blutlinie von Schattenjägern ist, ändert sich für sie alles. Auch ihre Mutter (Lena Headey) war eine sogenannte Mundi, eine Kriegerin gegen das Böse. Sie verteidigte die Welt der Sterblichen vor Dämonen und anderen Schattenwesen, die ständig versuchen ihre Macht auch auf die uns bekannte Welt auszudehnen. Nachdem Clary ihr Zuhause total verwüstet vorfindet und von ihrer Mutter keine Spur zu finden ist, trifft sie auf den jungen Jace Wayland (Jamie Campbell Bower), der ihr alles nötige beibringt und sie bei der Suche nach ihrer Mutter unterstützt. Doch schnell merken beide das viel mehr auf dem Spiel steht, denn der überaus gefährliche Anführer Valentine Morgenstern (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) schart eine riesige Armee bestehend aus Werwölfen, Vampiren und anderen tödlichen Kreaturen um sich, um einen letzten finalen Schlag gegen die Schattenkrieger auszuführen.
