I really have to say that this is a record that any modern jazz record collector should run out and buy. Ronnie Cuber plays baritone sax and i really have to say that he plays wonderfully. I have not heard a bari sax player that I like this well since Pepper Adams in his heyday. Tom Harrell is really a joyful trumpet player. The rythm section is right on. I had never heard of De Graaf. He is a Dutch piano player and I will be looking for his records in the future. This is really one of the best contemporary jazz records that I have heard in a very long time.

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Post Bebop / Fusion / Saxophone / Guitar

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. There's a lot of great chromatic elements going on here – thanks to the work of John Scofield on guitar, who's at that key point where he could effortlessly balance melody and tone with these edges that are sharp, but also very spacious – kind of a wide style that really reaches out and wraps up the rest of the players in the group! Not that the record's one of John's as a leader, because the real driving force here is David Liebman on tenor and soprano sax – but he also seems to let Scofield set the tone at many times – which opens up work from the rest of the players, who include Terumasa Hino on trumpet, Ron McClure on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums. This approach makes the record a lot less arch than some of Liebman's other material from the time – and titles include "Reunion", "Moontide", "Move On Some", "Autumn In New York", "If They Only Knew", and "Capitstrano".

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Henry "Pucho" Brown and his reconstituted nine-piece (plus three guests) Latin Soul Brothers are clearly in no mood to settle down into one bag on this wildly and refreshingly eclectic import CD, where traditional Latin rhythms and various R&B idioms meet and clash. The tone of this free-thinking band is set right at the beginning when rapper McBabee Power accurately informs us that the band is "about to get down with the old/new sound" over the fused Latin/hip-hop groove of "The Latin Soul Brothers."

Jazz / Hard Bop

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Out of hundreds of jazz CD's I own or have heard, this will always rank in my top ten. Recorded in 1981 with the awesome lineup of - Art Blakey (drums), Charles Fambrough (bass), Wynton Marsalis (trumpet), Bill Pierce (tenor sax), Bobby Watson (alto sax), and James Williams (piano). A little over 42 minutes long, this disc is as perfect as it gets and there is absolutely no filler! It's incredible to hear Blakey play… he is so good that he keeps a perfect rhythm going but then inserts offbeat syncopated and ghost beats on top of it. His style of playing always amazes me. Of course the rest of the band kick serious tail also and never miss a beat. Great tunes, outstanding arrangements, awesome solos, what else is there?

Jazz / Post Bop / Saxophone / Piano Trio

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Harold Ashby's a tremendous tenorist – almost like Von Freeman or Buck Hill, in that he had years of experience before getting a bit of wider experience on records – thanks to albums like this! The set's got Ashby's great raspy tone in perfect formation with a trio led by pianist Horace Parlan – himself experiencing a big new wave of exposure at the time, on some of his other Timeless sessions, which marked a move to spacious, more tradition-filled playing – which makes him a great partner for Ashby on this set!

Jazz / Contemporary Jazz / Post Bop / Piano Trio

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. The release of this records will be a rewarding experience for people who have followed the development of one of the major representatives od dutch jazz piano, Rein de Graaff. Pianist. Dutch self-taught pianist who's made himself one of Europe's best session players. De Graaff led a trio from 1959 to 1962, then joined The Jazzopters for a year. He then headed his own quartet until 1964, at the same time playing with Erwin Some and Gijs Hendriks. De Graaff formed a new group in 1964 that stayed together until the '80s.

Jazz / Hard Bop / Post Bebop / Piano Trio / Saxophone

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. Rein de Graaff continues on as “the keeper of the flame in Dutch Jazz;” an exponent of bebop, hard bop and straight-ahead Jazz. Buck Hill, Teddy Edwards and Von Freeman have all enjoyed long careers as well regarded, though under-recorded jazzmen. Freeman enjoys a reputation as one of Chicago's boss tenors and has recorded some in recent years. Hill and Edwards have even less recent recorded material available. Here, the three tenors have their say over a strong, tight rhythm section, in a format of lengthy solos over standards. They sound great, singly and together. This hard to find CD would be a welcome addition to a jazz lover's collection.

Jazz / Post Bop / Hard Bop / Modern Post Bebop / Piano

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. A mighty nice set from pianist Cees Slinger – a live performance from a very hip octet – a group who can come on with ensemble fury one minute, then play like a small combo the next! Slinger's choice of musicians is wonderful – and includes Dusko Goykovich on trumpet, Fredinand Povel on alto and soprano, and Ruud Brink on tenor – all musicians who really make the sound sparkle with their solos, but can also slide nicely into the context of the rest of the group, too – in the manner that Povel and Goykovich were so good at on performances for MPS. There's a great sense of color throughout – really showing off Slinger's skill as an arranger – and titles include "Never Forever", "From Way Back", "Changing Colours", "Fee Fi Fo Fum", and "Killer Joe".

Jazz / Bop / Piano

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. A great title for this one – given the extremely poetic sound of Tommy Flanagan on the piano! For years, Tommy's had a great talent for being as bopper, yet as sensitive as a mellower, more lyrical player too – a brilliant combination that shows up instantly in the first few notes of this set – a late 80s recording that's filled with warmth and subtle imagination. The trio features George Mraz on bass and Kenny Washington on drums – the latter of whom really gets things swinging in some great gentle ways – and titles include "Raincheck", "Lament", "Caravan", "Voce Abuso", "Mean Streets", and "That Tired Routine Called Love".

Jazz / Post Bop / Modern Post Bebop / Fusion / Jazz Funk / Keyboards

Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. A really nice mix of modes from keyboardist Jasper Van'T Hof – as some cuts feature the heavy electric modes we know from his MPS recordings of the 70s – but others feature a much more personal approach on acoustic piano! As with other records from the time, Jasper plays a range of keyboards here – from piano to Fender Rhodes to organ – and the group shifts a bit from track to track, depending on the mood – and features Wim Overgaauw on guitar, John Lee on bass, Zbigniew Seifert on violin, and Gerry Brown on drums. Lee and Brown kick in heavily on the jamming cuts, but lay back more on the mellower ones.
