Japan Quiet Life

Japan’s breakthrough record Quiet Life was released in both 1979 and 1980 is uniquely fitting for a band who were about to step out of the glam rock, post punk shadows of the late 70s and deliver an as yet genre-less record that would come to define the 80s.

Oil on Canvas is a live album by the English band Japan, released in June 1983 by Virgin Records. It was released six months after the band had broken up, and became their highest charting album in the UK, peaking at number 5. The live tracks on the double-album were taken from the band's performances at the Hammersmith Odeon in November 1982, during their final live concert tour. In 1988, it has been certified Gold by the British Phonographic Industry for sales in excess of 100,000 copies.

Japan were an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London. Initially a glam rock-inspired band, Japan developed their sound and androgynous look to incorporate electronic music and foreign influences, eventually becoming an influence on the UK's early-1980s New Romantic scene, though the band themselves were not a part of it. Gentlemen Take Polaroids was the band's first album for the Virgin Records label, after leaving Hansa-Ariola who had released their first three albums. The album was preceded by the release of the title track as a single, which peaked at number 60 in the UK Singles Chart. The album was moderately successful, peaking at number 51.

Their compilation Oto No Wa sets out to map the evolution of chilled Japanese sounds across 3 decades. Collecting 14 tracks, produced by a wide range of artists. From ambient pioneers to dance-floor veterans.

This disc reflects Eddie Higgins's musical interest, a range including standards, Brazilian compositions, folk music, and the classics. Drummer James Martin nicely covers the variety of rhythms in the program. Bassist Don Wilmer, of Miami, is one of the rare symphony musicians capable of first rate jazz. Much of the program has a Blanton - Ellington feel, rather than the usual piano-with-rhythm.

Gianandrea Noseda is widely recognized as one of the Leading conductors of his generation. He is Musical America's 2015 Conductor of the Year. On "Scheherazade" by Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov, Noseda proves as sensitive playwright who manages to still have energy for the next highlight in store at all dramatic outbursts of sumptuous work, and easily take back to the quiet and introspective moments sound violence and mood - and the handset so inevitably to captivate. This release (marked as Version 2) is the exact same same orchestra, same conductor, same interpretation and same location as the originally released version. The difference is that in the previous version - the recording has been made with three couples of valve microphones, all ancient and original Neumann U47, U48 and M49. This special edition has been made with only two microphones Neumann U47, capturing more acoustics of the theatre.

The lush occupied Orchestra (all in triplicate occupied woodwinds, strings, twelve brass and a gigantic array on percussion instruments) have been adopted in this recording from 2015 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Teatro Regio Torino. Giulio Cesare Ricci took this magnificent interpretation purely analog in Teatro Regio with the unbeatable Neumann tube microphones on - no better way to hear this! A real must-have.

Jan Lundgren is a triumph of musicality over virtuosic display. Known for his quiet and subtle playing, the Swedish pianist brings to his instrument together with his trio rhythmically intricate music with complex harmonies and structures in "Flowers Of Sendai".
