Along with the 10" LP SINGS LULLABYS OF BIRDLAND, the similar format SINGS LULLABYS FOR LOVERS marked Chris Connors debut on Bethlehem Records in 1954. Recorded just a week apart in August of that year, LOVERS features completely different personnel than the Ellis Larkins-accompanised BIRDLAND. Here Connor is joined by bassist Vinnie Burke's quintet, which includes accordion and clarinet, and the session has an altogether more swinging, jauntier feel. Needless to say, Connor is in excellent voice at the start of her solo career as she tackles jazz standards like "Out Of This World," "Lush Life," and "Stella by Starlight." The accordion-clarinet combination adds a novel, reedy texture to the proceedings as well.

Chris Connor (1927-2009) developed her jazz style while singing with Stan Kenton in 1953. The way she put it, Singing with Kenton was the most exciting thing that happened to me. And, believe me, it trained my ear. After leaving Kenton, she began building her reputation as a single working intimate, jazz-clubs on the Eastern circuit. But she had never thought herself a jazz singer and made this clear when she first began singing for Bethlehem later that year: I don t know why I began singing jazz, instead of commercial things. But I always sang off the melody when I was a kid, so I guess that s it. I don t really want to stick to only one kind of singing.

Atlantic Jazz: Best Of The '50s is self-explanatory but I will explain. This is a Rhino compilation of music from Atlantic Records' jazz vaults, representing the 1950's. Primarily instrumental but featuring a small handful of vocal jazz, it is some of the best music the label had to offer. This was a library disc so since there were stickers and handwriting on the booklet and disc, there are no scans for it.

The story about there being more suicides around the holidays turns out to be a myth, but like all urban legends, it caught on among the populace (or at least among lazy journalists) because it sounds like it should be true; as trumpeter Chris Botti writes in a sleeve note to his seasonal collection, December, "At no other time of the year is there a wider array of emotions than the month of December." This is a clue that Botti, in acceding to his record company's request that he undertake a Christmas album, was not interested in simply celebrating the season in his interpretations of holiday standards. There have been other such contemplative Christmas records: George Winston's album, also called December, is calm rather than celebratory, and Barbra Streisand's Christmas Memories, released in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, is another collection that takes in the season's complexities.

The compilers of this five-CD/cassette box set anthology, which contains 104 tracks and runs over six hours, have taken an inclusive, open-ended approach to both their selections and their sequencing. Unconventionally, the album is organized not chronologically, but thematically, in eight categories – "Steeped in the Blues," Straight out of Church," "Let's Have a Party," "Swinging the Songbook," "After Hours: Slow-Dancing and Torching the Songbook," "Jazz Compositions," and "Novelties and Take-Offs" (in other words, blues, gospel, dance, standards, slow standards, scatting and vocalese, and other). Annotator Robert G. O'Meally is quick to acknowledge that the categories are slippery, however, and to invite the listener to re-arrange the sequencing as he sees fit, a suggestion some may not appreciate.

Edwin James Costa (August 14, 1930 – July 28, 1962) was an American jazz pianist, vibraphonist, composer and arranger. In 1957 he was chosen as Down Beat jazz critics' new star on piano and vibes – the first time that one artist won two categories in the same year. He became known for his percussive, driving piano style that concentrated on the lower octaves of the keyboard. Costa had an eight-year recording career, during which he appeared on more than 100 albums; five of these were under his own leadership.
