This seven-CD collection exhaustively documents Columbia Records' first attempt at niche marketing with the Piano Moods series. Born out an impromptu marketing plan by a small Columbia Records staff in 1950, the Piano Moods series was hatched from the marketing discovery that there were more pianos than phonographs (that's record players for all you kids who don't remember vinyl LPs) in the homes of postwar America. The 12" LP had been launched a scant two years before and few titles were available. The Piano Moods series linked 20 albums of the same general type, all of them produced and sequenced by George Avakian, who had created the jazz and pop catalog on LP for Columbia beginning in 1948 – though they were originally released 33 rpm 10" discs to keep the folks with all those 10" 78 rpm discs happy when it came to storage. The sides were cut – usually – with no spirals (spaces) between tunes, giving the side a longer feel than its 17 minutes because the music was continuous. Most pianists preset their sequences and prepared introductions of the key of the preceding tune that modulated into the key of the next one.

This set reinstates a number of important piano recordings made for Pacific Jazz (and in the case of Jimmy Rowles Liberty). Russ Freeman and Rowles were seminal to so much of the important music that emanated from Los Angeles in the '50s and '60s that their achievements would be far too many to list here. Freeman's hard swinging style is featured on 14 tracks made between 1952 and '57. Rowles, an encyclopedic piano maestro, is represented by his rare Liberty album Rare - But Well Done and two Pacific Jazz tracks, made the end of sessions by others.

The piano trio in Jazz - it does not get more essential than this. On these ten CDs fifteen excellent alliances of piano, bass, and drums present prime examples of what has often been called Jazz' "chamber music". A perfect and poignant introduction to the genre, this collection of nineteen original albums also serves as a beautiful reminder of just how diverse this instrumental combination could be made to sound in the late 50s and early 60s. Just listen to the way a standard like Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" is interpreted by Bill Evans with his trio of Scott La Faro on bass and Paul Motian on drums or by Barry Harris, who also played with Miles Davis back in his hometown of Detroit, when accompanied by Joe Benjamin and Elvin Jones. Or how differently "Caravan" sounds when played by Thelonious Monk on his tribute to Duke Ellington or by the eminent Kenny Drew. Take away the bio- and discographic details and all musicological mumbo jumbo and the music will speak for itself, always deeply touching and emotionally sublime, perfectly suited for a Sunday at the riverside - or any other weekday or location for that matter.

Features 24 bit digital remastering. Comes with a description. An unusual global session for Atlantic Records – an album that has John Lewis presenting work by three other musicians that he feels are ripe for wider discovery! The set's got some killer work from Rene Utreger – a key Parisian player in the postwar years, working here with dexterity that's almost at a Bud Powell level! Dick Katz is also featured on the set – with some nice colors and tones in the mix, similar to some of the work he'd go onto do for Atlantic and other labels. And perhaps the least known here is the British player Derek Smith – stepping out with a lyrical style that's captured surprisingly well here – and which makes the record a key addition to Smith's catalog.
