Breathy vocals, jazzy backings, and a beautiful sound from singer Peggy King – an overlooked vocalist from the late 50s, but one who cut some really tremendous albums like this!

Discovered by Mitch Miller after he heard her radio jingle for Hunt's Tomato Sauce, Peggy King recorded only a few LPs during the '50s (for Columbia and Candlelite), but was a popular face on television and remained a steadfast interpreter of standards for decades after.

Along with Tony Bennett, Peggy King is among the very last certifiable stars of radio, television, motion pictures, theaters, nightclubs and recordings still working today. Shes packed a lot into a whirlwind career of the 1950s and early 1960s, working with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. to André Previn and a three-year association with comedian George Gobel; appearing in films like Zero Hour; singing at the 1955 Oscar Awards telecast; entertaining U.S. troops overseas with Bob Hope during the Korean War; and recording for Columbia Records, among others. In 1961, she married After Six Formal Wear Chairman/President Samuel Rudofker, started a family in Philadelphia, and left the business. Aside from a brief re-entry onstage and with new recordings made during the mid-1980s, Peggy King did not perform in public professionally again until almost two years ago, when she met pianist Andy Kahn, drummer Bruce Klauber, and bassist Bruce Kaminsky, members in long-standing 42 years, to be exactof Philadelphias popular jazz ensemble The All-Star Jazz Trio.

Peggy s singing is warmly intimate and sophisticated. All her charms are sheathed in highly imaginative and brilliant orchestral settings, by such gifted arrangers as Henri René, Jack Marshall, and Pete King.
Pam s creamy voice is as expressive and surprising as a jazz solo. The accompaniment Johnny Williams devised for Pam expresses her style exactly. Interwoven with strings is the excitement of a first-class rhythm section, and along with the freewheeling improvisation provided by Jack Sheldon s trumpet, the beat and the lightness of jazz are always present.

A funny thing happened on the way to Dead & Company’s last three scheduled tour dates of 2017. Well, not so funny from the standpoint of John Mayer, whose appendicitis attack and subsequent emergency surgery on December 5th necessitated postponement until the following February of the show scheduled for that night in New Orleans and the remaining two dates in Florida. But hey… if you’re gonna strand several thousand music-hungry fans anywhere, you could hardly pick a better place than New Orleans, birthplace of so much of our shared cultural heritage and a town where music and good times (and great food!) are continuously and abundantly available.

Throughout her long career Peggy Lee’s singing and performing style was praised for its startling intimacy. It’s no surprise, then, that the word “intimate” was used in a title for one of her earliest long-playing albums, Songs in an Intimate Style. For the first time since its 1954 release, and in advance of its 70th anniversary, this album is being presented in digital format so that it can be enjoyed in its original song sequence.
