This compilation of work, Dreamer is the one recording to go to if you want to experience the breathtaking sweep of the musicalianship of Shunzo Ohno, one of the most prodigiously gifted composers and trumpet-players to have roamed the world of Jazz. Mr. Ohno is something of a heroic figure in music and his dramatic fortunes – both good and bad – have been reflected in his incredible seven-minute long song “Musashi” a work that, in its darkness and its light, inadvertently, celebrates the samurai in him (Mr. Ohno, that is), characterised if one may, by the absolute indomitable spirit with which he has lived his sainted life, dedicated with shogun-like fire to completing an absolute mastery of music and life.

Harold Ousley was never a big name in the jazz world, but his lack of recognition as a leader doesn't erase the fact that he's a decent player. Ousley had just turned 71 when, in January 2000, he recorded Grit-Gittin' Feelin', a competent, if unremarkable, hard bop outing that employs Jodie Christian on piano, John Whitfield on bass, and Robert Shy on drums. The title Grit-Gittin' Feelin' implies that this CD contains a lot of soul-jazz, it's the sort of title you would associate with a funky, gritty, down-home organ combo date by Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, or Jimmy McGriff.

The project grew out of the musical acquaintance of the Hungarian double bass player Mátyás Szandai and the French violinist Mathias Lévy. After playing together in the Mathias Lévy Quartet, they decided to set up a project dedicated to Béla Bartók and invite to this the renowned Hungarian cimbalom player Miklós Lukács, a long-time companion of Mátyás Szandai. With the support of the Budapest Music Center, they made their first creative residency in January 2016. The debut concert of the trio took place on 27 May at the Hungarian Institute in Paris, followed by the recording sessions of the album at BMC and a full house concert at the Opus in January last year and further concerts in France during 2017.

For the past two decades pianist Aaron Goldberg has crisscrossed the globe, spreading his music and absorbing local knowledge along the way. True to the jazz mentality, he learned to embrace serendipity as an artistic muse. Five years ago this month, in an historic chateau at the exact geographic center of France, Goldberg was reunited with an early influence. Soon a new project began to take shape. Goldberg’s latest recording, At The Edge of The World, documents this recent collaboration with drummer and percussionist Leon Parker, a brilliant innovator and performer, in a new trio along with the gifted bassist Matt Penman.

Dance and jazz don’t often shuffle into the same semantic space these days, so this is an intriguing proposition in more ways than one. Although the title is the name of one of the emblematic house labels of the 90s, it also implies that whosoever vacates their seats to shake a leg, should partake in that crucial activity so often forgotten by music lovers – listening.

All the Colours of the World in the Black Forest ‘High quality music to be enjoyed by many people all around the world, no matter where they are’ Andreas Brunner-Schwer, MPS Records The German SABA and MPS family of labels extended this sentiment to include music from musicians all around the world, no matter where they were from - and here on Spiritual Jazz 17 SABA MPS we explore that very theme. Throughout the ‘60s & ‘70s both labels released a wealth of music from a wealth of international jazz musicians coming from both North and South America, Europe, the Caribbean and the Far East. The aim was to release jazz that was exciting, innovative and interesting, regardless of style: there was swing, blues, bop, avant-garde, fusion – and spiritual jazz. Plurality became a defining feature and the immense breadth of their output made both SABA and MPS worthy European counterparts to American imprints such as Blue Note and Impulse.
