Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock. Formed in 1965, the group defined the San Francisco Sound and was the first from the Bay Area to achieve international commercial success. They were headliners at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967), Woodstock (1969), Altamont Free Concert (1969), and the first Isle of Wight Festival (1968) in England. Their 1967 break-out album Surrealistic Pillow ranks on the short list of the most significant recordings of the Summer of Love. Two songs from that album, "Somebody to Love" and "White Rabbit", are among Rolling Stone's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Its smirky title notwithstanding, The Worst of Jefferson Airplane provides a fine recap of the band's first six albums. Released in 1970 shortly before Marty Balin's initial departure from the band, the album marked not only the end of the decade but, unwittingly, the end of the group's most stable phase in terms of membership. The track selections are evenly divided among the first-generation albums; only the live Bless Its Pointed Little Head is represented by a single entry. Pains were also taken to include songs featuring lead vocalists Balin, Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen. A few omissions are striking, most notably the chart single "Greasy Heart" and the signature Kantner track, "Wooden Ships."

Bark, Jefferson Airplane's seventh album, was an album of firsts: it was the first Airplane album in almost two years, the first made after the arrival of violinist Papa John Creach and the departure of band founder Marty Balin, and the first to be released on the group's own Grunt Records label. It was also the first Airplane album made after the onset of that familiar rock group disease, solo career-itis…

Thirty Seconds Over Winterland, originally released in 1973, was the final original album release from rock icons Jefferson Airplane. Captured live in concert, the album finds the early '70s edition of the Airplane (with Grace Slick, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady joined by Papa John Creach, David Freiberg and Johnny Barbata) at their hardest rocking, on a set that focuses on their latest material while acknowledging the Hot Tuna splinter group and glancing backward to their groundbreaking '60s work. Although their contemporary studio albums were somewhat disjointed, Jefferson Airplane were still a unified force onstage and many fans regard this period as the Airplane's live peak.

Remastered version of a compilation originally released on vinyl in 1970. Reflecting a sense of humor that not all the Haight-Ashbury bands could share or even afford, The Worst of Jefferson Airplane remains one of the most amusing titles of a '60s rock album. The disc smartly collapses two big singles ("White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," of course) and other well-selected tracks into a chronological mix that moves from flat-out hard rock ("It's No Secret") to the solo acoustic showcase ("Embryonic Journey") and the gospel/blues blessing "Good Shepherd."

The one-off reunion of Jefferson Airplane in 1989, which consisted of a tour and a new album, got it about half right, which is to say that the group's live performances were fine, but their self-titled album was a disappointment. Jefferson Airplane had always been a musical collective. Though it was founded by singer Marty Balin in 1965, the band consisted of strong personalities - guitarists Paul Kantner and Jorma Kaukonen, bass player Jack Casady, and singer Grace Slick (who replaced Signe Anderson in 1967).

No group epitomises the essence of the West Coast's 1960's counterculture scene better than Jefferson Airplane, and this record chronicles their development from the gentle folk rock beginnings ("High Flyin' Bird", "Blues From An Airplane", "Somebody To Love" - the last being a legacy from Grace Slick's first band, The Great Society) to the explorers of emotional states ("White Rabbit" et al) and their political activism ("Volunteers", "We Can Be Together").
