The wildest star among the first wave of rock & rollers – not for nothing was he nicknamed "The Killer" – Jerry Lee Lewis defied the odds and outlived all of his peers, a fate he seemed determined to outrun for a good portion of his long career. He came on like a supernova in the late 1950s, scoring three successive Top Ten singles that crystallized the ferocious excitement of rock & roll.

This wonderful Jerry Lee Lewis live album belongs in the collection of every rock and roller.

First and only caveat: Jerry looks bad, old – it shook me up !! Considering the life he's led, the hell raisin', the drugs, the drinkin', the fighting… Well, next to Keith Richards he's been #2 on the Next Rock Star To Die List since the the 1970s, and he almost did die more than once. And it shows, but Jerry can still play the keys off a piano; by the end of the concert he's rockin' up a storm with the best version of Roll Over Beethoven I've ever heard! That song alone is worth the price of this DVD. It's a long concert too, running 1 hour and 42 minutes and some. The bonus features are short and sweet, but who cares with all that great music………..

This 5-CD, 149-song box set brings together The Killer’s seminal recordings for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records label including “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “High School Confidential,” and much more.
Back in 1957, when Jerry Lee Lewis exploded on radio and jukeboxes with “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On” and “Great Balls of Fire,” rock’n’roll was brand new, young and wild, loud and dangerous. The same could be said of Jerry Lee. Jerry Lee was in Louisiana when he heard Elvis and Carl Perkins and knew he had to get to Memphis and Sam Phillips, a man he thought would understand his music. He was right. When Sam heard that wild, free spirit with a no holds barred piano pounding style, he put a microphone in front of him and …turned on the recording machine.

A characteristically humongous (8-CD) box set from the wonderful obsessive-compulsives at Bear Family, documenting the Killer's '60s tenure at Smash Records. Lewis made consistently good music during this period, but the combination of his personal scandals and the British Invasion made him a pariah to radio programmers until mid-decade, when he returned to his country roots. Highlights of the set include the entirety of a Texas live show, with Lewis and his crack band rendering various early rock standards at dangerously high (i.e., proto punk) speed, some excellent duets with his (then) wife Linda Gail, and gorgeous renditions of standards like Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" and Merle Haggard's "Lonesome Fugitive." Lewis fans with deep pockets should grab this one immediately…

Born in the Northern Louisiana Town of Ferriday in 1935, Jerry Lee Lewis grew up listening to a variety of music; The Louisiana Hayride and Grand Ol' Opry broadcasts, 78 rpm recordings of country singers, and the inspired gospel music of the Assembly of God Church. He also spent hours hiding behind the bar at Haney's Big House, soaking up the sounds of blues men like, then 18 year old B.B. King.
His parents both loved country music, and soon young Jerry Lee picked up on it too. At his aunt's house, Jerry would play on the piano and when his parents heard him, they knew he was naturally gifted. They even mortgaged their home to buy him his own piano when Jerry was 8………

The plain truth is that there's only one Jerry Lee Lewis and Rock and Roll music will never see another like him! The piano thumping, egocentric wild man with an unquenchable thirst for living captured live! Rock and Roll classics as well as down home blues and country ballads, there is nobody like the Killer! Tracks include: 'Keep My Motor Running', 'You Win Again', 'Lucile', 'Over The Rainbow', 'Sweet Little Sixteen', 'You Are The Won', 'Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On' And 'Great Balls Of Fire'.
Is there an early rock & roller who has a crazier reputation than the Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis? His exploits as a piano-thumping, egocentric wild man with an unquenchable thirst for living have become the fodder for numerous biographies, film documentaries, and a full-length Hollywood movie. Certainly few other artists came to the party with more ego and talent than he and lived to tell the tale.

The Story Of Rock And Roll would not be complete without a heavy dose of Jerry Lee Lewis. And certainly even fewer could successfully channel that energy into their music and prosper doing it as well as Jerry Lee.

Four-disc monument to the Killer, containing no filler… What with one thing and another, it took the Grand Ole Opry a while to invite Jerry Lee Lewis to make his debut. Sixteen years, in fact, from his first hits (“Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On”, “Great Balls Of Fire” ) to finally ushering the Killer onto the stage of Nashville’s Ryman auditorium in January 1973. The high temple of the country music establishment had their reasons for hesitating. Lewis was not known for family-friendly behaviour, unless one counts as such already having three families by this point – one, to the detriment of his box office, with a cousin he’d wed when she was thirteen. But he’d grown up, surely. He was pushing 40. He’d married for a fourth time, to someone old enough to vote. And he was reinventing himself as a proper country singer – he’d had hits with versions of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee”, Jimmie Rodgers’ “Waiting For A Train” and Ray Griff’s “Who’s Gonna Play This Old Piano?”. The Opry prepared to formally welcome the black sheep to the fold.
