Harold Mabern is a hard bop, post-bop and soul jazz pianist and composer. He is described in The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings as "one of the great post-bop pianists." On this release, Mabern is joined by Nat Reeves on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums.

Harold Gibbons (1910–1982), leader of St. Louis Teamsters Local 688, fought and defeated Communists and mobsters and was instrumental in ending racial discrimination in the union. His many friends included Frank Sinatra and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. For a few years, he was Jimmy Hoffa’s right-hand man—the two fell out after the Kennedy assassination, which Hoffa celebrated and Gibbons mourned. Exploring his day-to-day work, the author reveals the full story of Gibbons’ secret effort with Kissinger and Hoffa to bring an end to the Vietnam War.

"Reaching for the World" was the 5th album by American vocal group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. This, their debut album for the ABC Records label, was recorded in 1976 and released in 1977. This is the first album without Teddy Pendergrass, David Ebo was his replacement. Also joining the Blue Notes were Dwight Johnson and William Spratley. On release it reached #56 in the US Billboard 200 and #15 in the US R&B Charts. The lead single was "Reaching For The World" which reached #74 in the US Billboard 100 and #6 in the US R&B Charts. Then "After You Love Me, Why Do You Leave Me", which featured Sharon Paige, reached #102 in the US Billboard 100 and #15 in the US R&B Charts. Hostage Parts 1&2 was chosen as the final single, but failed to chart.

One of the great urban blues/jazz singers of the post World War II period, Jimmy Witherspoon recorded prolifically until contracting throat cancer in the 1980s. This delightful set was laid down in a London studio in June 1981, before he fell ill, when he was still roaring like a lion. Three members of his backing combo - Peter King (sax), Mike Carr (keyboards) and Jim Mullen (guitar) - were top-flight British jazz musicians perfectly in tune with the singer's needs, while drummer Harold Smith was an American then living in Europe. They're joined by one of Spoon's contemporaries, tenor saxist Hal 'Cornbread' Singer, whose career path resembles the singer's in its fascinating R&B/Jazz duality.

"Wake Up Everybody" is an album released by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes on the Philadelphia International record label in November 1975. It was produced by Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff. This would be the last album to include Teddy Pendergrass before he left the group for a solo career.
