Latin rhythms have infiltrated every branch of popular music, but none has had such a wide ranging influence as the rumba. It is this rhythm, combined with the New Orleans second line beat that formed the basis of the Stax and Motown sound and the more complex rhythms of funk in the 1960s. This compilation shows how Latin music first took hold of the blues, adding its irresistible rhythms to jazz and swing during the war years and getting teenagers black and white on to the dance floor. Rumba is everywhere in post-war popular music, from the Clash's Rock The Casbah, Little Richard's Slippin' and Slidin' to the Beatles' Ballad Of John And Yoko. Its 3-3-2 rhythm became an integral part of American music and continues to cast its spell over popular music. Rumba or Rhumba? The 'h' was added after it was introduced to America as a dance in the 1930s; rumba is the music, rhumba is the dance.

While heavily influenced by Art Tatum, this performer was hardly considered a heavyweight pianist during his career. Born Louis F. Bush, or Busch depending on the source, the keyboard maestro who would also make heavy use of the stage name of Joe "Fingers" Carr managed to make it into Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz, but with the following disclaimer: "A novelty performer rather than a jazz artist." The novelty itself was a kind of heavily sexed-up ragtime piano style that caught on in the very dawn of the hi-fi era. The invention was in sharp contrast to lounge music and would most likely have the opposite effect than a seduction if played in a bachelor pad. Carr began driving his piano this way while working as an A&R man for Capitol. In a brainstorm based on a sharp analysis of current trends, he decided to sign himself up as the mysterious "Fingers."

In the fall of ’95 I walked into the Bill Graham Management offices with a simple query: Can we organize a tour where I get to jam with my favorite guitarists every night? It seemed like it would be an easy thing to achieve, but it wasn’t.

He has played music from Gershwin to Tchaikovsky, but he remains identified as an exponent of the French pianistic tradition. Born January 27, 1948, in Mareuil-sur-Ay in the Marne department of France,

The Variations for Orchestra and the Piano Concerto belong to two different decades and stylistic periods. The Variations, commissioned by the Louisville Orchestra and written in Rome in 1954-55, are a summation of the works Carter wrote after the stylistic breakthrough of the Cello Sonata of 1948. Aaron Copland once remarked on Carter's wide knowledge of the music of his time; the Variations are a monumental synthesis of many different kinds of modern music (and in an overt way that Carter never again attempted). There are not only surface resemblances to Schoenberg and Berg, but there is also Carter's closest approach to serial technique. Charles Ives, who died while Carter was composing the work, is invoked explicitly in Variation 7, and Ives's technique of superimposition is the basis of the whole work's texture and form. Also present in the music are the spirit of Debussy, particularly of La Mer and Jeux; the rhythmic experiments of Conlon Nancarrow and Henry Cowell; jazz (variation 8); and even the rhetoric of the Great American Symphony of Harris, Copland, and Schuman. In addition to these many stylistic strands, Carter also attempted to use all possible variation techniques, including an array of canonic and contrapuntal devices—Variation 2, for instance, is a free mensuration canon in which the size of intervals varies along with the rhythmic values.
