With Crystal Planet, Joe Satriani made an effective return to his signature sound following the erratic blues-rock detour of Joe Satriani. For the follow-up to Crystal Planet, Satriani is once again exploring novel territory in an effort to keep his music fresh, and Engines of Creation is the biggest stylistic shift he's made yet – to electronic music…

Few "guitar shredders" of the late '80s were able to cross over into the upper reaches of the pop charts, but Joe Satriani proved to be an exception to the rule. And with over eight full-length studio albums in the shops by late 2003, Satch was ripe for a "best-of" collection – resulting in the release of the double-disc overview Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology. If you're a newcomer and are looking for a finely balanced set of highlights from throughout Satriani's career, Electric Joe Satriani is definitely the way to go.

G3: Live In Concert matches six-time Grammy Award nominee Joe Satriani with three-time Grammy nominee Steve Vai, and Grammy winner Eric Johnson. The CD documents the group's 1996 North American tour, and features three tracks apiece by each of the guitarists as well as three no-holds-barred jams featuring all three axe-men. G3: Live In Concert is sure to please all lovers of guitar wizardry. This high-energy CD showcases the eclectic compositional skills of the three men, with tracks featuring everything from pumped-up fusion grooves to funk-infused rhythms and jazz-flavored numbers. Each tune, though, is really a vehicle for the soaring guitar pyrotechnics for which Vai, Satriani and Johnson are famous.

This two-disc offering from hard rock guitarist Joe Satriani encompasses a two-hour concert, a 45-minute documentary with plenty of additional live footage, and various other bonus material that includes still more playing. Put it all together and Satriani Live! offers a good three hours' worth of fast and furious fretwork–in other words, a whole lotta notes (hard to say how many, exactly; like the size of the universe or the number of atoms in the human body, it's a figure that's difficult to calculate and nigh on impossible for the finite mind to fathom).

The very title of What Happens Next suggests that Joe Satriani is opening himself up to the unexpected, and the 2018 album winds up proving this suggestion correct. Teaming with his Chickenfoot bandmate Chad Smith – best known as the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers – and Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes, Satriani pivots away from the space age prog that had been his stock in trade during the 2010s, but no matter how heavy it gets, What Happens Next is by no means a straightforward hard rock album…
