The Rock is the sixth solo album by John Entwistle, bassist for The Who. It is his only solo album on which he did not sing lead vocals, a role performed instead by Canadian Henry Small. Beginning in 1985, the album was recorded over an 18-month period at Entwistle's own Hammerhead Studios in England and, on completion, was released as a private pressing by his label, WEA Records, but it was not publicly released until 1996. Having remained in the vaults for ten years, the album has subsequently been released in four different editions between 1996 and 2005, with separate covers for each. ~Wikipedia

The John Entwistle Band: Live finds the late Who bassist happily ensconced in his side project at the 1999 Itchycoo Park Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, playing a brief set for an appreciative crowd. Under the circumstances, Entwistle and his quartet wisely stick to Who covers, some composed by Pete Townshend ("The Real Me") and others ("Trick of the Light") by the Ox himself, though Who staples by other artists ("Summertime Blues," "Young Man Blues") help fill the bill.

John Entwistle's solo career has never been particularly outstanding in terms of songwriting quality. His complicated, yet rhythmic bass playing has always shone through, however.

As evidenced by the songs John Entwistle wrote for the Who ("Boris the Spider," "My Wife," "Success Story," etc.), the group's bassist had a knack for penning straight-ahead hard rockers. But those expecting Entwistle to stick with hard rock on his subsequent solo outings were in for a surprise, as evidenced by the double-disc collection So Who's the Bass Player: The Ox Anthology. Covering his entire solo career (1971's Smash Your Head Against the Wall through 2000's Music from Van-Pires), The Ox Anthology is a fine overview of Entwistle's unpredictable work outside the Who.
