Crise économique mondiale… Crises environnementales…

As one of the leading lights of New Orleans music, Dr. John deserves a splashy, star-studded celebration – which is precisely what producer Don Was assembled on May 3, 2014 at New Orleans' Saenger Theatre. Was led a house band featuring drummer Kenny Aronoff, trombonist Sarah Morrow, keyboardist Chuck Leavell, guitarist Brian Stoltz, and pianist John Gros, then invited a host of rockers, blues musicians, and Big Easy legends to the party…

World première recordings of works by John Tavener, Arvo Pärt, Valentin Silvestrov and Alexander Knaifel sit alongside pieces by Henryk Górecki and John Cage on the first recording from a new Irish label operated by noted concert promoters Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS). All of these very popular contemporary composers have in various ways been deeply influenced by profound spiritual, religious or cultural encounters, and the disc celebrates them in a moving, magical programme. A Place Between intersperses - to wonderful effect - beautiful works for string quartet (Silvestrov's meditative Ikon, Tavener's deeply moving Ikon of Joy/Sorrow, Pärt's reflective Da Pacem Domine) with two solo piano works (Pärt's uplifting Hymn to a Great City, and Cage’s melodic and expressive In a Landscape). Górecki's memorial for Michael Vyner, Good Night and Knaifel’s mystical O Heavenly King both feature the haunting voice of soprano Patricia Rozario. Silvestrov's 25.X.1893 lullaby is a melancholic and lyrical piece for violin and piano.

2010 release from Pete Brown, one of the great unsung heroes of the 1960s' Brit Rock scene, recorded with musical partner Phil Ryan. Comprising 14 tracks, the album also contains magnificent contributions from the likes of Arthur Brown, Mick Taylor, Clem Clempson, Jim Mullen, and Annie Whitehead, as well as some inimitably Jazz-flavoured horn charts from a stellar brass section including Lee Goodall, Laurie Brown, and a cameo from Art Themen. Highlights include a superb duet between Pete Brown and Maggie Bell on the sulphurous, smouldering 'Between Us', and Brown's trademark lyrical wit suffuses the likes of 'Klip-On Weirdness Kit'. The whole album is a delightfully, reassuringly old school Brit Rock record that radiates the kind of quality ensemble playing that many thought was extinct when the '60s morphed into the '70s.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
