This classic 1972 album on Elektra by John Kongos has Queen/Cars director Roy Thomas Baker remixing superb production by Gus Dudgeon, the man who created many an Elton John hit. Elton sidemen Ray Cooper, Caleb Quaye, Dave Glover, Roger Pope, Sue (Glover) and Sunny (Leslie) – pretty much the crew from John's 1971 epic Madman Across the Water – are all excellent here. But this album has more to offer than the solo records by Kiki Dee and Bernie Taupin, which also proliferated around the same time. Though he never made it to Joel Whitburn's Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits in the U.S.A., there were three minor splashes on this disc: "Tokoloshe Man," "Jubilee Cloud," and "He's Gonna Step on You Again." The totally original sound – producer Dudgeon on "asses jawbone," bicycle bell, maracas, and Mike Noble playing the "clapper board" – build a texture one didn't hear on Elton John records.

Having had success in South Africa in the early 1960s with his band Johnny and the G-Men, as well as a solo artist, Kongos went to the UK in 1966, to pursue his musical career. His first UK based group, Floribunda Rose, formed in April 1967, comprised the British musicians, Pete Clifford (guitar) (born Peter William Frederick Clifford, 10 May 1943, Whetstone, North London) and Jack Russell (bass, vocals) (born 29 April 1944, Caerleon, South Wales), who had come to South Africa in June 1965 with The 004; drummer Nick 'Doc' Dokter (born 24 July 1945, Kampen, Overijssel, the Netherlands), a latter day member of 004; and the Cyprus-born keyboard player Chris Demetriou from John E Sharpe and the Squires. After one single, "Linda Loves Linda", Clifford returned to South Africa to join The Bats and Dokter moved to Canada and worked with Five Man Cargo. Drummer Henry Spinetti joined and the remaining members recorded three singles as Scrugg.

Breaking the Waves is a 1996 film directed by Lars von Trier and starring Emily Watson. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1970s, it is about an unusual young woman, Bess McNeill, and of the love she has for Jan, her husband, who asks her to have sex with other men when he becomes immobilized from a work accident. It is the first film in Trier's Golden Heart Trilogy which also includes The Idiots (1998) and Dancer in the Dark (2000). The film is divided into seven different chapters. Each chapter begins with a different impressionistically filmed panorama title frame featuring early 1970s rock music interludes. The album includes Deep Purple, Elton John, T-Rex, Jethro Tull, John Kongos, Mott the Hoople, Procol Harum, Python Lee Jackson with Rod Stewart, Roxy Music, Thin Lizzy, Leonard Cohen, and the beautiful rendition 'Siciliana' by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Gus Dudgeon is rated as one of the greatest British producers of all time; his work is in millions of homes across the world. Starting out as an engineer, he got to produce the Zombies classic ‘She’s Not There’ in 1964 when the allotted producer popped out for refreshments. There followed an eclectic ride through the 60s as a fully-fledged producer working with acts as diverse as John Mayall and Eric Clapton’s Bluesbreakers, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Ralph McTell (he persuaded Ralph to record the original ‘Streets Of London’ when it wasn’t included in a forthcoming session), David Bowie’s first hit, prog rockers Audience and psychedelic act the Locomotive.

UK three CD set. One Way Glass is a very different kind of RPM compilation. Instead of the usual cross-section of '60s collectables, this unique release takes a fresh look at British music from the late '60s through to the mid-'70s, with an eye on overlooked dancefloor-friendly finds. The rhythmic backbone of One Way Glass lies in progressive rock outfits who - every so often - would emulate their jazz heroes and record funky sides tucked away on albums or B-sides. Many of these tracks (Jonesy, Hardin & York) have been known to collectors of Funky Breaks for years. In addition, One Way Glass boasts some excellent funky Folk tracks which lighten the load for the listener - tracks by Alan James Eastwood, Bridget St. John, Dana Gillespie, Joan Armatrading and Melanie, for example. More typical funk rock selections come from Hanson (featuring future Bob Marley & The Wailers mainstay Junior Marvin on guitar) and Curtis Knight Zeus (fronted by Jimi Hendrix's old bandmate and featuring future Motorhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke). Maybe it all started - in terms of breaks and hip hop culture, at least - with DJ Kool Herc, who would spin key segments from old rock records to create the funky break.

Featuring a 40-page booklet crammed with rare illustrations and the stories behind the songs, Peephole In My Brain is an essential addition to Grapefruit’s acclaimed year-by-year series of late Sixties/early Seventies British rock and pop.
1971 stands as an odd, rather surreal year in British pop history: while American soft-rockers and singer-songwriters were dominating the album charts, the year in which the country ch-ch-changed over to decimal currency saw the homegrown pop/rock scene becoming increasingly eccentric.
