Celebrating sixty years since the launch of one of the most successful independent record labels in US Popular music. Received wisdom would have us believe that before Motown, no black-owned record company had made a significant impact on the US mainstream. However, the actuality is something else entirely. Way back in the early 50s, long before Berry Gordy had written his first song, VEE-JAY RECORDS - a black, family owned and run, Chicago-based label - was establishing itself via a steady stream of Blues, R&B, DooWop and Gospel hits.

Slide Guitar Blues / Contemporary Blues

A northern California-based blues guitarist, Roy Rogers works firmly out of a Delta blues acoustic style and is particularly good with a slide. A member of John Lee Hooker's '80s Coast to Coast Band, Rogers produced and played on Hooker's Grammy-winning comeback album, The Healer, and its follow-up, Mr. Lucky. During the early '70s, Rogers played with a variety of Bay Area bar bands. In 1976, he and harpist David Burgin recorded A Foot in the Door, which was released on Waterhouse Records. For the next few years, he played in various bands before he formed his own, the Delta Rhythm Kings, in 1980.

For anyone in their mid-teens in the mid-5Os, and into music, it had to be rock'n'roll - American rock'n roll. There was no British equivalent to the sound. In the UK, it was Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Platters, Alan Freed, Radio Luxembourg, Voice Of America. If the right people get to know about this and hear the quality, this will sell and sell.

Blind Pig Records #BP74892

Best known initially as a sympathetic sideman to John Lee Hooker and later as the producer who oversaw the great bluesman's '80s commercial comeback, Rogers is an estimable recording artist in his own right. Chops Not Chaps, his first album, showcases his sterling slide technique over the course of 11 originals and covers. Rogers, who's also a pretty fair singer, is under the spell of Robert Johnson here, covering four of his songs. These versions won't make you forget the originals, but they may help you develop a deeper appreciation of deep blues.

Electric Blues | Feelin' Good Records #024

Electric blues, Texas style! Inspired by the greatest players, he sounds like a Freddie King/Johnny Winter blend. If you like extended guitar soloing on a good level, and Johnny Winter-like vocals, you will love Texas Slim! Texas is a big state and Texas blues is big blues - so a name like "Texas Slim" is not to be used lightly. John Lee Hooker got away with it on King Records back in 1949 as he was a long way from Texas and probably had little to do with it. Many years ago, Johnny Winter settled instead for "Texas Guitar Slim" - but both are relevant for our man here, as the first blues he recalls hearing was by John Lee Hooker, and as for Johnny Winter, well, let's hear from Slim himself: “Johnny Winter is certainly my favorite guitarist of all time! I liked him before I realized he WAS blues.

Aces backed with eights. In poker it’s called ‘the dead man’s hand’ because those were the cards Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was killed in a Deadwood Saloon. But then gambling has always been a dangerous game, whether in a casino, bar or saloon. The link between gambling and drinking is just one of the themes explored here. Blues and Country legends were no strangers to Whiskey, Women or Loaded Dice, as we demonstrate in this collection featuring B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Hank Thompson and many more.

Blues on the Range is a nice, but not particularly noteworthy, set of traditional blues. What makes the album worth a listen is Roy Rogers' facility as a slide player - he can make his guitar sing. However, the quality of the songs and performances are slightly uneven, making it only of interest to die-hard fans.

Acrobat has devoted a number of collections over the years to anthologies of the biggest hits in different years and decades across different genres, and this one fills a particular gap in the catalogue, bringing together all the records which featured at No. 1 in all of Billboard’s charts relating to the R&B market during the 1940s. In October 1942, Billboard launched the “Harlem Hit Parade”, which was replaced in February 1945 by the “Most Played Juke Box Race Records”, to which in 1948 was added the “Best Selling Retail Race Records”. This 97-track 4-CD collection features every record which reached No. 1 in any of those charts, apart from a few which are unavailable for copyright reasons. We have also included those from 1950, as it is arguably the final year of the decade, and we had space in the 4-CD format to accommodate them for the benefit of collectors who do not have our “R&B No. 1s of the ‘50s” set.
