This Dutch blues band was formed in the Hague around 1967, becoming a regular outfit from 1969. The early line-up included Bjorn Toll (vocals), John Lagrand (harmonica), Ted Oberg (guitar), Ruud Fransen (bass) and Niek Dijkhuys (drums) but although the name remained wholesale changes soon took place, bringing in a new singer, Nicko Christiansen, and new bass and drums, Peter Kleinjan and Beer Klaasse, the latter pair being swiftly replaced by Gerard Strutbaum and Cesar Zuiderwijk, while keyboard player Henk Smitskamp was added…

Although unknown to the English-speaking market, Cuby & the Blizzards have been one of Holland's top blues bands since the mid-'60s. Some of their early singles had a beat/punk orientation, particularly "Stumble & Fall" and "Your Body Not Your Soul," both of which would be reissued on various Dutch beat compilations a few decades later. They quickly settled into a straighter blues groove, however. Their claims to fame in the larger rock/pop world are that they briefly backed Van Morrison in the gap between his departure from Them and the beginning of his solo career, although details of the association remain murky; also, at one point lead guitarist Eelco Gelling was asked to join John Mayall's Bluebreakers, although he declined.

One thing is certain about the idiosyncratic J. B. Lenoir, he was a true original. No one ever sounded quite like him and despite comparisons by some writers to Arthur Crudup his high pitched vocals were pretty much unique. Although J. B. Lenoir only had one hit in the US with "Mama Talk to Your Daughter" his influence over the British blues scene was immense. In fact John Mayall was a huge fan and he helped to get his 45s released in the UK. Rocking R&B and topical social commentary all thrown in the mix. This is Chicago blues with a twist. Let's call it Chicago blues J.B. Lenoir style.

Long before Blues Traveller, there was this band called The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, led by the vocal & harmonica talents of Paul Butterfield. Many aspiring blues and rock musicians passed through Butterfield's band throughout the 1960's & 1970's and went on to greater fame, Mike Bloomfield being one of the most famous. Here on this 1978 concert DVD, recorded for the Rockpalast German TV show in Essen at the Grugahalle, Butterfield and his 'non' blues band rip it up on an all too short 45 minute set that incorporates blues and funk into a hard rockin' set of covers and originals.

This 2008's four CD set, the most extensive retrospective look at Peter Green's truly legendary career. The set contains essential Peter Green music drawn from all stages of his career. From his first tentative recordings with the likes of Peter Bardens and John Mayall, it moves through the genesis of Fleetwood Mac and the band's many classic blues recordings including "Ramblin' Pony" and "Black Magic Woman". Fleetwood Mac's subsequent blues and rock fusion chart hits - titles like the utterly unique "Albatross", "Oh Well" and the haunting "Man Of The World" - are all included, as is the best of his later solo work and Splinter Group recordings. The set is stylishly packaged in a hardback digicase with 64-page booklet containing enlightening liner notes, rare photographs, memorabilia, plus commentary and artwork from Peter himself. Quite simply, this is the ultimate Peter Green collection - a special release befitting a special musician and songwriter who is rightly one of the most revered blues guitarists of all time.

Before accepting the coveted role of guitarist for John Mayall's legendary Bluesbreakers, Rocky Athas had established a long, successful solo career. Partnering repeatedly with Grammy Award-winning producer Jim Gaines, Rocky Athas has released a series of albums, including Miracle, Voodoo Moon, and Lightning Strikes Twice, and his band of Texas musicians has wowed audiences. It the beginning of his career, Rocky was the creative vortex behind Lightning, one of the biggest draws in Texas nightclub history, regularly opening for national acts. By the age of 23, the Oak Cliff, Texas native had been included in Buddy Magazine's now-legendary list of Top Ten Guitarists one of the first and youngest to receive the honor. Over time, Rocky has shared that honor with the likes of Eric Johnson, Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Gibbons (of ZZtop), and Johnny Winter.

Holding the estimable position of lead guitarist for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Texas blues-rocker Buddy Whittington sports some impressive credentials. Nevertheless, his self-titled solo debut succeeds on its own terms. Whittington's own work owes more to fellow Longhorn fretmaster Stevie Ray Vaughan than to Mayall, and his piercing, tensile guitar licks and earthy, down-to-business vocal style give the album a unified feel while showing that this recording is more than just a busman's holiday.–by Jim Allen
