The newest addition to ECM’s popular Old and New Masters Series is a box set reprising the four albums made by Peter Erskine’s American-British-Swedish trio with John Taylor and Palle Danielsson between 1992 and 1997: You Never Know, As It Is, Time Being and Juni. If its core concept – a piano led by a drummer – was unorthodox, the group was nonetheless influential, and the recordings provide an excellent environment for appreciating the distinctive writing and playing of John Taylor.

John Taylor has several strings to his bow: he can play with a certain nonchalance or feverishly throw his notes in a hurry. The introspective pianist of "Insight" or "Rosslyn" - to quote recent records - is more talkative than usual. Vaguely Asian, a composition by Steve Swallow previously recorded by Taylor as a solo, loses some of its abstraction.

As house pianist at London’s legendary Ronny Scott’s jazz club, Taylor accompanied many of the icons of jazz, and in so doing honed his individual style into what became one of the most important voices on the European jazz scene. The gigs and recordings of his own groups, his long-time association with trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, his many ECM trio recordings with Peter Erskine and Palle Danielsonn and groups lead by the likes of Jan Garbarek and John Surman established Taylor’s importance.

Oddly enough, this outing signifies British pianist John Taylor's first "ECM Records" issued solo effort, especially when considering the artist's twenty-five year tenure with this notable record label. Here, Taylor employs one-time Bill Evans trio bassist Marc Johnson, and New York City based drummer Joey Baron for a set consisting of Taylor originals, such as the mood evoking, "The Bowl Song," and others. A seminal "ECM" session ace, Taylor has graced recordings by drummer Peter Erskine and trumpeter Kenny Wheeler throughout his distinguished career.

Pianist John Taylor’s death in 2015 robbed British jazz of one of its most distinctive exponents, an improviser and compose who confidently blended folk and classical forms with a distinctive off-centre approach to swing. Taylor’s already substantial legacy of recordings is not static, however. Close To Mars is a trio recording made in Ludwigsburg in 2006, released now on CAM JAZZ, which was Taylor’s label of choice during the final, highly creative decade of his life.Joined by veteran bassist Palle Danielsson and the most musical of drummers Martin France–now, sadly, both no longer with us (another reminder of the passage of time) –Taylor performs eight original compositions (and one by his late friend Kenny Wheeler) that will delight long-term admirers but also introduce his work to a new generation who never had the chance to see him perform. Not yet a historical release, but an important and bittersweet one. Close To Marsis John Taylor at his mature best, familiar but adventurous… (Brian Morton)

With the success of projects like Azimuth and recent recordings on ECM with the likes of Peter Erskine and Jan Garbarek it’s not hard to justify the statement that John Taylor was one of the worlds finest musicians. ‘Pause…’ was his first ever LP as leader and originally appeared on the Turtle label in 1971 produced by John Surman. It captures an artist at the outset of his musical explorations and certainly stands the test of time. With an all star British line up the CD confirms what a talent he was even then, as the recording has become a favourite of many modern jazz aficionados and a must for all collectors.

John Taylor’s fabulous trio, plus Julian Arguelles on sax… The successful trio reunites for another classically elegant recording, this time adding a sax, which spontaneously and seamlessly blends in to make this a striking and remarkable album. Like an oxymoron in chiaroscuro, the music by the English pianist in his latest “Requiem For A Dreamer” moves with a complex simplicity; the simplicity of listening and the lyricism of the melody contrasted by a formal richness and research that is beyond simple or trivial.
