5CD compilation entitled: 'Songs From The 100 Best Australian Albums'. It is a companion to a new book written by John O'Donnell, Toby Creswell & Craig Mathieson. As the name suggests, the book counts down the 100 Best Aussie albums of the pop era with detailed exploration of why the albums were chosen. The compilation is a 5CD pack and will include many tracks which rarely clear for compilations including not one, but two Midnight Oil tracks. Anda retrospectives continue to prove salutary. Testament has devoted a number of important re-releases to him, and there is fortunately not much duplication between them and this DG boxed set of five discs – Kreisleriana and the later Symphonic Etudes. The kernel of this set is Schumann augmented by Bartók, though not one of the more well-known Anda recordings, and his famed Brahms B flat major Concerto, and a wartime record of which he was greatly proud, the Franck Symphonic Variations. There’s also the not inconsiderable pleasure of listening to him in Chopin, in the Diabelli variations, a Schubert sonata and in some Liszt recorded at various times during his career.

Since The King of Rock 'n' Roll was the complete '50s masters, it was easy to assume that its five-disc '60s sequel, From Nashville to Memphis: The Essential 60's Masters, rounded up all the masters from that decade, which is simply not the case. The producers deliberately avoided the soundtracks to Elvis' movies, which perhaps makes sense, given that they are roundly and rightly disparaged as Presley's low point, which then opened the doors to presenting just what they judged as the best non-soundtrack recordings he made during the '60s. They also disregarded the gospel recordings, saving them for the double-disc 1994 collection Amazing Grace: His Greatest Gospel Songs, leaving this as an overview of the best of his pop and rock material of the '60s, all recorded after he got back from the army…

This box is the definite overview of Georgie Fame's Columbia recordings, gathering all 46 tracks from Fame's four albums for the UK Columbia recordings, with no less than sixty bonus tracks from non lp singles, non lp EP tracks, album outtakes, BBC sessions, a 1963 demo session and stray live recordings. Several tracks included have previously been issued only on limited Japanese editions of these Fame albums. Georgie Fame is a seminal figure in British popular music who helped to introduce the sounds of rhythm and blues, jazz, soul, ska and other ‘black’ music styles to a UK audience in the 1960s.

Maria João Pires “shapes and colours every phrase, and with immaculate taste, and she makes sure the phrases end as eloquently as they begin,” wrote Gramophone in 1974. “She conveys not just the details but the relevance of every note to the whole … Best of all, she communicates everything she has discovered about the music, and it is worth having.” This Portuguese pupil of Wilhelm Kempff, Pires was one of the artists who defined the Erato label in the 1970s and 1980s. This 5-CD box gathers together the recordings she made over the period from 1976 to 1985 and it reflects the consistent focus of her repertoire, with its special emphasis on Austro-German composers of the Classical and early-Romantic periods. Embracing solo works, piano duets and concertos, it contains works by Mozart, Schumann, Beethoven, but also by Bach and Chopin.
