Even if the best and most popular songs on this 1965 album are the ones most likely to show up on greatest-hits compilations ("The Long Black Veil, "Orange Blossom Special," "It Ain't Me Babe"), it certainly rates as one of Cash's finer non-greatest-hits releases. If nothing else, it would have historical importance for the inclusion of three Bob Dylan covers, at a time when Dylan was just starting to get heavily covered by pop musicians (and not often covered by country ones). "It Ain't Me Babe," with duet vocals by June Carter, was the most notable of them, although hearing it these days, some may be taken aback by the mariachi horns.

Johnny Cash there are few musicians to embody a style on their own. Personalities beyond the boundaries of the genre in which history usually ranks them. The Elvis, The Miles, and of course the Johnny Cash ! Although he remains one of the gods of country music, he was also inseparable from the history of rockabilly, rock'n'roll, folk and even gospel. Cash was a voice (baritone out of the norm) but also a pen that signed masterpieces like I Walk the Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, Get Rhythm or Man In Black, The Man In Black as he will be nicknamed throughout his life. A life begun on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas and sparse with themes as Imperial as redemption.

The idea of a live album as a documentary is a naïvely outdated one. For decades, fans have understood that, if one wanted to hear a tip-to-tail, warts-and-all live performance by one of their favorite musicians, a bootleg would be just about the only way, since the "live" albums typically released by most acts were usually cobbled together from multiple performances (and sometimes even across multiple tours). This state of affairs means that while these releases are providing a simulacrum of the live experience, they never exactly transport the listener to any fixed place in time.

TRIPLE CD SET OF RARE JOHNNY CASH LIVE RECORDINGS As iconic a performer and composer as any who have emerged since the mid-1950s, Johnny Cash continues to delight and attract fans old and new, more than 15 years since the great man s sad passing in 2003. This triple disc set celebrates the live musical performances of Johnny Cash, when this formidable superstar was always at his most potent. Kicking off on Disc One with a couple of shows Cash played in 1958 and 1959, along with his Tennessee Two, for Country Style USA and Guest Star USA, public radio shows promoting applications to join the US army, and the purchase of US government bonds, respectively. Disc Two features another show of huge interest, this time from 1970, when Johnny Cash and his wife June Carter, performed in front of President Nixon and his aides at the White House. Including all the inter-song chat, plus a lengthy intro from the President, this rarely heard performance is another Cash oddity that fans will be hungry to hear. Disc Three concludes this sterling set with a show Johnny played at the University of Texas in Austin, in December 1994. Taking place a few months after the release of Cash s 81st studio album, the Rick Rubin produced masterpiece, and the record which put Cash back in the spotlight after some years in the wilderness, American Recordings, this majestic performance completes this compilation in style.

Johnny Cash was one of the most imposing and influential figures in post-World War II country music. With his deep, resonant baritone and spare percussive guitar, he had a basic, distinctive sound. Cash didn't sound like Nashville, nor did he sound like honky tonk or rock & roll. He created his own subgenre, falling halfway between the blunt emotional honesty of folk, the rebelliousness of rock & roll, and the world-weariness of country. Cash's career coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and his rebellious attitude and simple, direct musical attack shared a lot of similarities with rock. However, there was a deep sense of history – as he would later illustrate with his series of historical albums – that kept him forever tied with country.

At Folsom Prison is a live album by Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records in May 1968. After his 1955 song "Folsom Prison Blues", Cash had been interested in recording a performance at a prison. His idea was put on hold until 1967, when personnel changes at Columbia Records put Bob Johnston in charge of producing Cash's material. Cash had recently controlled his drug abuse problems, and was looking to turn his career around after several years of limited commercial success. Backed by June Carter, Carl Perkins and the Tennessee Three, Cash performed two shows at Folsom State Prison in California on January 13, 1968.
