Hearing tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander is one of the great treats in jazz. There are few artists on stage today who combine chops, imagination and technique with a fluidity of ideas as he does. This imposing improviser is reunited here with pianist David Hazeltine and they're joined by another jazz great , the always daring trumpeter Jon Faddis on a couple of the tracks. Add in the swing engendered by bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth and you have a formula for excellence, if ever there was one. Alexander produced the session and there is a strong latin feel throughout thanks to the contributions of vibrant percussionist Alex Diaz spurring the band on with a whole trunk load of Latin percussion instruments. In addition to the Sergio Mendes & Brazil '66 title tune, the set-list features a satisfying mix of originals and covers all given the patented Alexander treatment.

This album is the second of the studio recordings by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 with A & M Records label, and is certainly one of the top of his production. Composers like Jorge Ben, Michel Legrand, Joao Gilberto, Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim bring creations that are splendidly arranged by Sergio Mendes, who can find fused arrangements between pop and jazz, wrapped by the great Brazilian rhythms, bossa nova and samba. Mendes offers a very personal sound, in which rhythm, melody and rich harmonies create a soft sophisticated atmosphere with its warm emotions.

Far Out Recordings proudly presents Cry Babies’ self-titled debut album from 1969. An early formation of Brazilian funk greats Banda Black Rio, Cry Babies took inspiration from the iconic US soul records of James Brown, The Isley Brothers and Kool & The Gang, all of whom are covered on their first and only album. Pioneering Brazil’s funk fascination, Cry Babies paved the way for the likes of Jorge Ben, Dom Salvador, Trio Mocotó and Azymuth: with fat funky drum breaks, big round bass, touches of psychedelic Brazilian surf, and the kind of hazy soulful arrangements that could only emerge from Rio de Janeiro.

I knew that music was my language, really. That music was going to take me to know the world, was going to take me to other lands. Why I thought I had the music of the earth and the music of the sky. ” Gil, about his childhood in the city where he lived, in the interior of Bahia, where he ran to the sound of the first clarinet of the Band, which started the celebrations of the patron saint and seemed to invade everything.
