For many "The Joshua Tree" is one of the finest rock records made. Others see it as overwrought and overly earnest. But this was a band with a conscience and who on the evidence of this record could write damn fine songs. After the bold experimentation of "The Unforgettable Fire", with its sprawling ambience produced by the winning partnership of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, "The Joshua Tree" was a more focussed affair, with the production more subtle and assured. The remastering on this re-issue, supervised by The Edge, brings out all the details and nuances in the Lanois/Eno soundscape. Just listen to the shimmering sound of The Edge's "infinite guitar" on the intro to "With Or Without You"! Never has it sounded so gorgeous!

During the 1980s U2 had fast become a critically acclaimed band who reached stellar proportions. Due to their puritanical approach to both music and performance their ability to maintain their status was failing. They had fallen into the trap of being defined by a sound that was too American and an approach that was too stadium. Their album The Joshua Tree, which won the album of the year award at the Grammys in 1987, put them over the top, but they soon found that when you are at the top the only way to go is down.

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb is the eleventh studio album by Irish rock band U2, released in November 2004. Much like their previous album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb exhibits a more conventional rock sound after the band experimented with alternative rock and dance music in the 1990s. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb and its singles won all nine Grammy Awards for which it was nominated (U2 themselves were awarded eight out of the nine).

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin formed in 1976. The group consists of Bono (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), the Edge (lead guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals), Adam Clayton (bass guitar), and Larry Mullen Jr. (drums and percussion). Initially rooted in post-punk, U2's musical style has evolved throughout their career, yet has maintained an anthemic sound built on Bono's expressive vocals and the Edge's effects-based guitar textures. Their lyrics, often embellished with spiritual imagery, focus on personal and sociopolitical themes. Popular for their live performances, the group have staged several ambitious and elaborate tours over their career…

A rock & roll open secret: U2 care very much about what other people say about them. Ever since they hit the big time in 1987 with The Joshua Tree, every album is a response to the last – rather, a response to the response, a way to correct the mistakes of the last album: Achtung Baby erased the roots rock experiment Rattle and Hum, All That You Can't Leave Behind straightened out the fumbling Pop, and 2009's No Line on the Horizon is a riposte to the suggestion they played it too safe on 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. After recording two new cuts with Rick Rubin for the '06 compilation U218 and flirting with will.i.am, U2 reunited with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois (here billed as "Danny" for some reason), who not only produced The Joshua Tree but pointed the group toward aural architecture on The Unforgettable Fire.
