Andy Williams - Christmas Present  Music

Andy Williams - Christmas Present | 320 Kbps

Of all the Andy Williams Christmas albums available, Christmas Present is by far his most religious collection. The release consists of thirteen tracks and all of them, with the possible exception of the title track, could be considered hymns. Like other male crooners from the 1960s, Williams was portrayed as a bit of a swinger, but here when he sings the “Ave Maria” he sounds as pious and pure as an altar boy. In fact, the sensitive take is one of his best – if the “Ave Maria” isn't proof enough, give “What Child Is This” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem” a spin. Williams picks up the tempo a little bit with “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “Joy to the World”.

It would be an understatement to say that there was a fair amount of variety on this set. Drummer Tony Williams is heard in two duets with keyboardist Jan Hammer, with a quartet also including keyboardist Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott (who unfortunately sticks to lyricon) and bassist Stanley Clarke, and he welcomes rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose, keyboardist Brian Auger, guitarist George Benson, Hammer and tenorman Michael Brecker on other tracks. Much of this music is closer to R&B than to jazz, although there are many strong moments. But the most interesting selection is certainly "Morgan's Motion" which matches Williams with pianist Cecil Taylor in a powerful (and completely atonal) collaboration.

It isn't surprising that Lucinda Williams' level of craft takes time to assemble, but the six-year wait between Sweet Old World and its 1998 follow-up, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, still raised eyebrows. The delay stemmed both from label difficulties and Williams' meticulous perfectionism, the latter reportedly over a too-produced sound and her own vocals. Listening to the record, one can understand why both might have concerned Williams. Car Wheels is far and away her most produced album to date, which is something of a mixed blessing. Its surfaces are clean and contemporary, with something in the timbres of the instruments (especially the drums) sounding extremely typical of a late-'90s major-label roots-rock album.

Joe Williams was the last great big-band singer, a smooth baritone who graced the rejuvenated Count Basie Orchestra during the 1950s and captivated audiences well into the '90s. Born in Georgia, he moved to Chicago with his grandmother at the age of three. Reunited with his mother, she taught him to play the piano and took him to the symphony. Though tuberculosis slowed him down as a teenager, Williams began performing at social events and formed his own gospel vocal quartet, the Jubilee Boys.

All the works in this recital, except for those by Sor and Carulli, are transcriptions, from either the lute, piano or orchestra. The composers' ideas are revealed with added intensity in the new medium, and their music sounds as natural on two guitars as if written for them in the first place.

This is the lost incarnation of Tony Williams Lifetime, formed to tour in support of his 1978 all-star release The Joy Of Flying. A band of young unknowns including guitarist Tod Carver and fretless bassist on-the-rise Bunny Brunel allow Williams' powerhouse grooves and solos to shine. The tunes here are from the LPs Ego (1971), Million Dollar Legs (1976) and The Joy of Flying (1978). The concert was performed live at the Thirteenth Annual Berkeley Jazz Festival, University of California, Berkeley Campus, CA on the 25th of May, 1979 and broadcast by KFAT-FM.

Charles Melvin Cootie Williams was a jazz trumpeter, born in Mobile Alabama in 1911, who enjoyed a lengthy career as a sideman and bandleader, and was especially renowned for his associations with Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. This collection takes its title Concerto For Cootie from a tune Duke Ellington composed in his honour.
