An Oscar-winning film composer associated with both French and American art-house cinemas, Lebanon-born Gabriel Yared started his career as a pop composer and musical arranger for the likes of Michel Jonasz and Françoise Hardy. His first encounter with films came in 1973 with Samy Pavel's Miss O'Gynie et les Hommes Fleurs. Six years later, he was invited by Jean-Luc Godard to score Every Man for Himself, and went on to compose up to seven scores a year. Unlike other prolific film composers, such productivity didn't result in simple repetition; Yared sought his inspiration in various genres and styles, ranging from classics to folk, rock, and jazz. His moody saxophone compositions in Betty Blue and his score for The Lover, which experimented with Asian instruments, were awarded Césars (French Oscars).

If Renée Zellweger had any apprehension about stepping into Judy Garland’s slippers for the biopic Judy, it’s hard to tell by listening to her performance on the film’s soundtrack. Zellweger channels the smoky, quavering vocals of late-period Judy—years after the MGM musicals, amid the ups and downs of multiple marriages, hospital visits, financial ruin, and the prescription drug abuse that would be her undoing. Garland may not have been in top form for one of her final engagements, at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, but Zellweger is at her strongest here inhabiting the diva and taking on her best-known numbers: “Over the Rainbow,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Zing Went the Strings.” Featuring guest appearances from Sam Smith and Rufus Wainwright (the latter of whom is a lifelong Judy devotee and recorded a full-album tribute to her 1961 Carnegie Hall comeback), this bittersweet recording illuminates some of the brightest spots of Garland’s career, viewed through the lens of one of her darkest moments.

If the artists who enjoyed success during the folk music boom of the early '60s, very few have had a career as long and varied as Judy Collins, in large part because she's displayed a stylistic range matched by few of her peers. While Collins is a gifted songwriter who penned a few of her best songs, including "Since You Asked," "My Father," and "Secret Gardens," it's her talent and versatility as an interpretive vocalist that has brought her lasting success.

Blending folk, bluegrass, country and traditional music, these three powerhouse musical figures have crafted an unconventional holiday release centering on wintry vignettes rather than carols and hymns yet it carries the spirit of the holidays throughout. Fjeld and CCL have toured together and recorded two albums together both of which went gold in Norway!

This collection gathers together the nine albums that Judy Collins recorded during the '70s and '80s: Whales & Nightingales, Living, True Stories And Other Dreams, Judith, Bread And Roses, Hard Times For Lovers, Running For My Life, Times Of Our Lives, and Home Again.. The albums are in CD-sized facsimile of the original sleeves, along with a booklet that compiles the credits and liner notes from those sleeves plus a note by Mick Houghton, author of Becoming Elektra: The True Story Of Jac Holzman's Visionary Record Label. They were all made for Jac Holzman's Elektra Records, a label she helped to shape in the '60s in her first decade as a recording artist through her adventurous spirit. Her forte was imaginative interpreting songs by her peers and she continued this trend throughout the '70s and into the '80s.
