An Oscar-winning film composer associated with both French and American art-house cinemas, Lebanon-born Gabriel Yared started his career as a pop composer and musical arranger for the likes of Michel Jonasz and Françoise Hardy. His first encounter with films came in 1973 with Samy Pavel's Miss O'Gynie et les Hommes Fleurs. Six years later, he was invited by Jean-Luc Godard to score Every Man for Himself, and went on to compose up to seven scores a year. Unlike other prolific film composers, such productivity didn't result in simple repetition; Yared sought his inspiration in various genres and styles, ranging from classics to folk, rock, and jazz. His moody saxophone compositions in Betty Blue and his score for The Lover, which experimented with Asian instruments, were awarded Césars (French Oscars).

In a recording career which is approaching its sixtieth anniversary, Grammy-winning Judy Collins has steadily built upon her early repertoire as that of a mainstream Folk singer, to include show tunes, mainstream Pop, Rock, and standards. She is equally acknowledged as a songwriter, musician, political activist, poet, writer, and film-maker. Way back at the turn of the '60s she was established at the cutting edge of New York's Greenwich Village Folk scene, where she was 'discovered' by Bob Gibson.

For her fifth album, Judy Wexler has embraced a concept that's oddly foreign in the jazz vocal realm. Instead of walking her way down the all-too-familiar avenues for singers classic Broadway-cum-jazz material, canonical works written by revered jazz figures, pop tunes reshaped with harmonic facelifts, self-penned originals she takes the road less traveled by focusing on the work of jazz composers thriving in the present. In doing so she magnifies the importance of these artists, highlights material worthy of greater attention, and elevates her own standing as a gifted stylist and interpreter.

If Renée Zellweger had any apprehension about stepping into Judy Garland’s slippers for the biopic Judy, it’s hard to tell by listening to her performance on the film’s soundtrack. Zellweger channels the smoky, quavering vocals of late-period Judy—years after the MGM musicals, amid the ups and downs of multiple marriages, hospital visits, financial ruin, and the prescription drug abuse that would be her undoing. Garland may not have been in top form for one of her final engagements, at London’s Talk of the Town nightclub, but Zellweger is at her strongest here inhabiting the diva and taking on her best-known numbers: “Over the Rainbow,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Zing Went the Strings.” Featuring guest appearances from Sam Smith and Rufus Wainwright (the latter of whom is a lifelong Judy devotee and recorded a full-album tribute to her 1961 Carnegie Hall comeback), this bittersweet recording illuminates some of the brightest spots of Garland’s career, viewed through the lens of one of her darkest moments.

During the late 1950s, Marty was one of the biggest UK pop stars, with a string of Top 10 hits for Philips Records, on which he was often backed by The Wildcats. As the '60s dawned, Marty continued to enjoy chart success while evolving his sound away from American rock 'n' roll. In the mid-'60s, he also recorded as folk-pop trio The Wilde Three with wife Joyce (ex-Vernons Girls) and future Moody Blues star Justin Hayward. During the late 1960s, Marty became a hit songwriter for other artists, penning originals for The Casuals ('Jesamine'), Status Quo ('Ice In The Sun') and Lulu ('I'm A Tiger'). While his own career continued apace throughout the 1970s, Marty was also heavily involved with the launch of daughter Kim's career in the early 1980s. In recent years, Marty has fronted one of Britain's most respected rock 'n' roll bands. Marty is a unique celebration of Marty's long and illustrious career. While Discs One and Two are devoted to all of his early A's and B's, Disc Three unveils a hitherto unissued Radio Luxembourg performance from 1959 while Disc Four boasts a whole CD's worth of previously unheard demo recordings handpicked from Marty's own archive. Beautifully presented with remastered sound, detailed sleeve-notes and a booklet awash with images from across the years, Marty perfectly commemorates the musical legacy of one of Britain's most enduring talents who was awarded an MBE for his achievements.
