Moving into what he later described as the second part of a trilogy of albums, Jehovahkill sees Julian Cope's focus shift from environmental collapse to raging against the destructiveness of mainstream religion and an attendant celebration of earlier, heathen impulses.

My Nation Underground is the fourth solo album by Julian Cope. It produced three singles including "Charlotte Anne" (which reached number 35 in the UK charts in September 1988 and was also Cope's only song to reach any position on the US charts). The album's music is an extension of the more commercial side of Cope's songwriting, following on from the relative commercial and organisational success of its predecessor Saint Julian.

"The 6th instalment of Cope's Notes delves deep into the Archdrude's most notorious album: JEHOVAHKILL. "Recorded immediately after the highly successful Peggy Suicide double LP and long world tour, Cope and his musicians entered the studio eager to replicate their new live sound. During that tour, they had shed their obsession with on-the-one funk in favour of the stentorian motorbeats of Krautrock. Find out how it all went down in Cope's 6000-plus-word essay, scrutinise the enchanting 4-page pull-out of JEHOVAHKILL'S heroes, then grab your headphones for the CD's 40-plus minutes of rare demos, versions and unreleased music.

Although Julian Cope was largely a social hermit during the mid-'80s, his darkest years personally, he remained a friend and favorite of BBC DJs Janice Long and John Peel, who regularly coaxed him from his Tamworth home into their studios for sessions. (In keeping with his craving for solitude, the majority of the mid-'80s recordings feature Cope strumming away at a guitar with only a cheap and clattery drum machine for accompaniment.) The results are startling for those familiar with the more polished studio recordings; stripped of its relatively lush orchestration, "Reynard the Fox" sounds like Roky Erickson at his most paranoid.
