When Jorge Bolet died in October 1990 the world lost one of its last ‘great Romantics’. Spirituality, a luxuriant tonal palette, a real sense of architecture, breadth, grandeur, all allied to a prodigious technique – these were just some of the qualities that informed his playing. Now, for the first time, Decca collects all the recordings he made for the label, from 1977 to 1990. Released for the first time and included in this set, is his last recording, a selection of Chopin’s Nocturnes and the Berceuse, recorded just seven months before his death.

Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1914, Bolet was the fifth of six children. Showing an early aptitude for the piano, Bolet was able, through private funding as well as pure serendipity (something that informed several key moments in his professional life), to study at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia with David Saperton, who also taught Shura Cherkassky, Abbey Simon and the young Julius Katchen. Saperton was the son-in-law of Leopold Godowsky and later, Bolet took lessons with him.

Sergei Prokofiev is a prominent figure in music history and one of the most talked-about composers of his time. As the protagonist of a new era, he mixed up the international music scene in the first decades of the 20th century. Prokofiev, who had at first violently attacked the musical traditions of Romanticism and created works that "could not be removed from the world" (as H. C. Schonberg formulated it), later became almost a romantic". This development can be traced by listening to the 14 original albums from the years 1954 to 1961 on this documentation. It includes all of his piano-, violin- and cello-concertos, as well as his complete piano sonatas - a genre that the composer studied for over forty years - as well as the five most important symphonies, including his world-famous "Classic" (Fricsay 1954) and the extraordinarily popular Symphony No. 5 under George Szell from 1959.

Here, together with a Schumann recital (see page 126) are the first fruits of Andras Schiff's new Teldec contract; a live recital taken from the prestigious series, ''Meesterpianisten'' in Amsterdam. I wish I could be more enthusiastic about such a debut, for Schiff is unquestionably among the most gifted and mercurial musicians of our time; a 'masterpianist' indeed. His programme, too, is exemplary with Handel's theme heard again in Brahms's Handel Variations and with Reger's massive Bach Variations as a daunting and enterprising close.
