Essential Blues is an attempt to trace the evolution of the music from the Mississippi Delta to Chicago and other modern, urban cities. It does a fairly good job in providing a brief history, but the main strength of the collection simply comes from the music. Featuring cuts from Lightnin' Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King, Slim Harpo, Junior Parker, Elmore James, Albert Collins, and many, many others, it's a quick and effective way to sample a variety of different blues styles. For neophytes, Essential Blues does offer a splendid introduction to the genre.

Phil Guy is Buddy's brother but he's a great bluesman in his own right. This is the perfect companion piece to Buddy's excellent "Live at the Checkerboard Lounge" on which Phil plays in Buddy's band.

On November 22, 1981, just prior to a three-night stand at the Rosemont Horizon arena in Rosemont, Illinois, The Rolling Stones dropped in on a Muddy Waters gig at Chicago’s Checkerboard Lounge. Waters, who would pass away less than two years later, already had the audience’s rapt audience before the Stones even entered the club. With supreme authority, the Chicago blues legend led his band through several numbers before inviting Mick Jagger up to the stage to join him on “Baby Please Don’t Go.”

Li Yi Jun gain popularity in the Taiwan music industry with her signature song《萍聚》 when it was released in 1987 and the album sold more than 200 thousand copies. She is also the voice behind the many theme songs of the popular Taiwanese dramas. In 1993 She was nominated for the Best Hokkien female singer category for the song 《苦海女神龙》 in Taiwan Golden Melody awards.

Phil Guy didn't eclipse his older brother Buddy's status as a blues superstar, and in reality, Phil's funky brand of blues was not captured correctly for posterity. But he remained an active attraction on the Chicago circuit, following in his sibling's footsteps and patiently waiting for his own star to rise up until his death. Like his sibling, Phil Guy played with harpist Raful Neal (for a decade) before leaving the Baton Rouge scene for Chicago in 1969. There he played with his brother's high-energy organization as well as behind harpist Junior Wells (Phil handled guitar duties with Sammy Lawhorn on Wells' underrated mid-'70s Delmark album On Tap). Phil Guy cut albums of his own for JSP; they were generally lacking in originality if not spirit. Phil Guy lost his battle with liver and kidney cancer in August of 2008.
