Jutta Hipp had a strangely brief career, dropping out of music altogether shortly after emigrating to the United States. She studied painting in Germany and played jazz during World War II. When the Soviets took over East Germany, she moved with her family to Munich. Hipp played locally and in 1952, recorded with Hans Koller. She led her own quintet in Frankfurt in 1953-1955 and recorded for several labels, including a session that was later released by Blue Note. Moving to New York in November 1955, Hipp played at the Hickory House for much of the first half of 1956, recording two trio albums for Blue Note. Although originally inspired by Lennie Tristano, she was criticized at the time for being too influenced by Horace Silver; however, a studio album from July 1956 with Zoot Sims finds her showing a fairly original style…

In 1958 Sims played with Benny Goodman at Expo ‘58 in Brussels, where he met the Viennese-born Hans Koller, then Europe’s coolest tenor sax.. Two years earlier Sims had made a Blue Note recording with the German pianist Jutta Hipp and he was keen to meet other European jazz musicians. So Jo Berendt, head of the jazz department at the then SWF, invited the two to a studio concert, supplementing the horn section with Adi Feuerstein and Gerd Husemann (fl , ts), Willie Dennis (tb) and Helmut Brandt (bs).; The ensemble also featured Hans Hammerschmid on piano, Peter Trunk on bass and on drums Kenny Clarke, who had quit the Modern Jazz Quartet and moved to Paris.

A jazz musician is a juggler who uses harmonies instead of oranges, says pianist Benny Green. Seventeen of his most prominent colleagues illustrate this bon mot on the ten jam-packed CDs of the Ultimate Jazz Piano Collection. From swing experts such as Duke Ellington, in a rare and out-of-print trio recording, to bebop heroes such as Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans, the father of the modern jazz piano, these masters of their craft show why the 88 piano keys still mean the world in jazz. The stylistic spectrum is as broad as it is stringent: from the oldest recordings in this collection, the album Bud Powell's Moods, to Bill Evans's Portrait in Jazz from 1960, these 145 pieces contain a veritable history of piano jazz. But above all, it is beautiful music - the greatest melodies from In a Sentimental Mood to Round About Midnight to Misty and Blue In Green, the most moving rhythms and the most important jazz interpreters on the piano on this unique 10 CD box set.

The first of 100 tunes in this collection is a 1937 recording of tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and guitarist Django Reinhardt playing Out Of Nowhere. It was recorded two years before Blue Note Records was founded. The taping was done for EMI’s Capitol label’s French division. This is an ominous hint as to the content of the 10-disc “100 Best of Blue Note” box set, which at first glance appears to have all the trimmings of a slick 21st century collection.
