2012 two CD collection from the British Psych-Rock band. Now widely considered to have been one of the finest groups to emerge from the British Psychedelic Pop scene, Kaleidoscope signed to the Fontana label in the epochal year of 1967. Over the next couple of years, they issued two magnificent albums, Tangerine Dream and Faintly Blowing, as well as a quintet of vibrant, inventive, highly commercial singles. Somehow, though, they failed to achieve the glittering prizes that everyone predicted would be theirs. Frustrated by their lack of success, and with a heavier musical climate taking hold, they ended the decade with a change of name to Fairfield Parlour and a new deal with progressive Rock label Vertigo. But, as singer and lyricist Peter Daltrey observed at the end of Kaleidoscope's debut album, the children stayed children, and they lived in their dreams. Undoubtedly the definitive Kaleidoscope package, Further Reflections assembles the group's entire recorded legacy for the Fontana label under one roof for the first time. Relax your eyes, for after all, we can but share these minutes…

Tangerine Dream (1967). Tangerine Dream probably has the edge as the best of this British psychedelic group's two albums, but not by much. A long sought-after psychedelic rarity, it includes several of Kaleidoscope's best songs: "Flight from Ashiya," "Dive into Yesterday," "The Murder of Lewis Tollani," and especially the fragile ballad "Please Excuse My Face."
Faintly Blowing (1969). For their second album, Kaleidoscope delivered something an awful lot like their debut, a body of pleasant, trippy, spacy raga-rock, with the main difference that they pushed the wattage a little harder on their instruments - they'd also been performing pretty extensively by the time of their second long-player, and a lot of the music here was material that they'd worked out on-stage in very solid versions…

In 1996 the British Fontana label issued a best-of for the U.K. band Kaleidoscope with the appropriate title of Dive Into Yesterday, after the first track. It is a wonderful journey containing a 12-page booklet chock full of photographs, extensive liner notes, and 23 original recordings from 1967 to 1969, all evolving over the course of the disc. The music is dramatically different from the box released in 2000, The Fairfield Parlour Years, on the Burning Airlines/NMC label, and helps put this important ensemble's work into perspective. "Flight From Ashiya," "Dive Into Yesterday," and "The Murder of Lewis Tollani" are among those culled from the album Tangerine Dream, while "Poem" and other titles come from the follow-up, Faintly Blowing.

King's Kaleidoscope are a faith-based chamber pop band from Seattle, Washington. Led by singer/songwriter Chad Gardner, the group formed in 2010 at Mars Hill Church where Gardner was a worship leader. Looking for a big, orchestral indie pop sound, he slowly assembled the ten-piece group, handpicking players from within the church and developing their lush sound a bit more every week. Sporting a variety of influences from math rock and hip-hop to the dense sound of Canadian indie outfit Broken Social Scene, King's Kaleidoscope recorded their first live EP, Sin, in 2011.

Although the Bay Area may have seemed to corner the market on the psychedelic "Summer of Love", the equally bountiful Los Angeles scene was the breeding ground for one of the more inventive units of the mid- to late-'60s. The incipient incarnation of Kaleidoscope synthesized rock & roll with roots and world music, first yielding Side Trips (1967), arguably the most diverse effort of 1967. Their ten-track outing features multi-instrumentalists David Lindley (guitar/banjo/fiddle/mandolin), Solomon Feldthouse (saz/bouzouki/dobro/vina/oud/dombek/dulcimer/fiddle/guitar/vocals), Chester Crill (aka Fenrus Epp and Max Buda) (violin/viola/bass/keyboards/harmonica), Chris Darrow (bass/guitar/mandolin/vocals) and John Vidican (percussion).

This 20-track compilation from Castle focuses on the colorful Scottish progressive rock outfit's lo-fi/R&B-infused late-'60s period. For a band that entered the public consciousness with a cover of the Beatles' "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," Marmalade did fairly well for themselves, scoring a hit with the infectious "I See the Rain," available in both the single and album versions here, as well as maintaining a career that crossed genres more than a few times. That said, Kaleidoscope: The Psych-Pop Sessions is just that, so anybody looking to delve further into the group's history, or are just looking for a copy of the aforementioned Beatles cover, would be better off with Sanctuary's two-disc Ultimate Collection.

Soul Jazz Records’ new album Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown brings together many of the ground-breaking artists involved in the new jazz scene that has developed in the UK over the last few years. Featured artists include Matthew Halsall, Yazmin Lacey, Ill Considered, Tenderlonious, Theon Cross, Emma-Jean Thackray and many, many more in this ground-breaking release. As well as sharing a pioneering spirit in these new artists’ approach to frontier-crossing musical boundaries, a further theme of this album is that many also share a determination to independent practices - and most of these artists’ recordings featured here are either self-published or released on independent labels. While the attention of this new wave of jazz artists has up until now has been London-based, this album shows how this movement is spread across the whole of Britain (and indeed beyond).
