Other than a Christmas album and a greatest-hits collection, we haven't heard anything new from contemporary jazz saxophonist Dave Koz since his successful 2007 date At the Movies (though recording somewhat infrequently has been a Koz trademark). Hello Tomorrow, his first date for Concord, is not only full of new tunes in a diverse array, but hosts an impressive cast of band and guest players, as well. Produced by John Burk and Marcus Miller, the set kicks off with the euphoric jazz-funk groover "Put the Top Down," featuring Lee Ritenour on lead guitar, Ray Parker, Jr. on rhythm, Brian Culbertson handling the synths and programming, Omar Hakim on drums, Sheila E. on percussion, and a three-piece horn section adding to Koz's alto.

Concept discs tend to go one of two ways–they dance around a theme, causing listeners to draw their own conclusions about how well the album hangs together, or they come on strong. Sax man Dave Koz's At the Movies floats mellifluously into the second category. From the moment Judy Garland's voice comes keening through the crackle of "Over the Rainbow," we're transported directly into the cinema alongside Koz and a handful of high-wattage friends. Only in Koz's theater, the music is at times more heart-tuggingly pretty than we remember. "Moon River," from Breakfast at Tiffany's meanders gracefully before Barry Manilow surfaces to lend a languid, signature-smooth vocal.

Saxophonist Dave Koz has become one of the most successful and beloved instrumentalists of his time, and helped establish smooth jazz as a musical force to be reckoned with. His career catapulted with 1993's Lucky Man, one of Koz' slickest and most commercial releases (which is not a bad thing by any means) to date. The album has an undeniably crisp and clean feel, akin to the color schemes used in the artwork. The musical styles range from funky and peppy, as in the opening "Shakin' the Shack," "Silverlining," and the evergreen "You Make Me Smile," to tender and sweet, as in "Faces of the Heart," "Lucky Man," and "Tender Is the Night," which features hypnotic vocals courtesy of Phil Perry.

A must listen for any fan of these artists.

Off the Beaten Path is truly unique and refreshing. Dave Koz goes far beyond what others have done in this genre by combining his trademark sax sound with acoustic guitar, accordion, mandolin, tambourine, and loads of other instruments not normally associated with jazz. Adding the fiddle and marching snare drums in Follow Me Home is an especially nice touch. For me, Dave's new CD The Dance was a major disappointment after hearing Off the Beaten Path. That CD does not have nearly the vibrancy heard here. Off The Beaten Path has become my favorite Dave Koz CD….which was a major feat…Lucky Man is still a must-have for any smooth jazz collection. My favorite cuts are: Don't Look Back, Wake Up Call, Follow Me Home, Flat Feet, Leave the Light On, Under the Spell of the Moon and My Back Porch.
