In honor of CPE Bach's 300th birthday, hänssler CLASSIC will be releasing an exciting series of recordings dedicated to the music of this well known but hitherto neglected Bach son during the first 3 months of 2014. At the beginning there are the so-called “Hamburg” symphonies Wq 182, interpreted with great sensitivity and bite, when necessary, by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under the renowned conductor and former violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, Wolfram Christ. Maestro Christ sees these works as expressive pieces, open to multiple interpretations that invite the listener to experience them as almost Romantic in their gesture and content. Deciding on a fortepiano continuo instrument is not only a historically informed decision, but contributes to a perfectly balanced overall sound.

Carl Philipp Emanuel was the most famous son of the great Johann Sebastian. He developed his own musical language, the Empfindsamer Stil, of which the expression of personal feelings, a free and sometimes improvisatory style and the frequent alternation of opposing moods and characters were the keywords. His music can be both charming and vehement, may please or shock the listener, can be simple of complicated: a perfect example of the Sturm und Drang movement of his period.

Bachs Passions and other great choral works in performances with the Staatskapelle Dresden under the masterly direction of Peter Schreier who also sings the role of the Evangelist. Schreiers aim in Bach interpretation is to bring new lightness without following the full dictates of authentic performance, and in this he succeeds superbly. The recording is first rate, with the choral forces well separated.

The Bach & Sons 2 project traces the family tree via works by father Johann Sebastian Bach and his sons Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christian. The pianist is constantly on the lookout for unusual repertoire. “I am constantly on the look-out for repertoire that is still little known. And so I wanted to take the much-recorded original Bach and add something that is not so common, and at the same time is worth listening to.”
