Lost for 50 years, these newly discovered concerts, featuring an hour and 45 minutes of performances, were filmed at the 1961 Antibes Jazz Festival in France and show Ray Charles in his prime period with the original Raeletts and his most legendary band (including David "Fathead" Newman and Hank Crawford.) These first concerts he ever gave in Europe, opened the door for Ray Charles to become one of the most revered international stars America has ever produced. The original 16mm films have been newly transferred and digitally restored and remastered, capturing Ray Charles at the peak of his powers, the very essence of "genius".

One of the premiere fusion groups, the Mahavishnu Orchestra were considered by most observers during their prime to be a rock band, but their sophisticated improvisations actually put their high-powered music between rock and jazz. Founder and leader John McLaughlin had recently played with Miles Davis and Tony Williams' Lifetime.

In this 1969 concert, Jimmy Smith was still at the top of his game. Trim and dapper, his enthusiasm in his playing is obvious from the start. The camera angles give us special insight into how Jimmy Smith did the remarkable things he did. Watching his performance of “The Sermon” is indeed special. We are permitted to see the entire instrument. Watching his left hand walk the bass on the lower manual is to witness a technique he invented. When he begins the drone with his right thumb and begins to improvise with the remaining fingers, he gets fired up and deeply into the feeling. This is one great piece of jazz video.
