The 4 Orchestral Pieces have a strong affinity with the stage works Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and The Wooden Prince, conceived in the same period.

The 4 Orchestral Pieces have a strong affinity with the stage works Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and The Wooden Prince, conceived in the same period. The Concerto for Orchestra is one of Bartóks final works, full of folk tunes, and utterly colourful and virtuosic for all the instruments. As such, it’s an ideal piece to showcase the congeniality between the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and its star Chief Conductor.

After 2021’s critically acclaimed Echoes of Life, pianist Alice Sara Ott has now recorded a selection of works by Beethoven for her latest album. At the heart of Beethoven is Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 15, in which she is joined by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and its Chief Conductor Karina Canellakis. Ott and Canellakis were in fact approached by Apple Music to record this particular concerto, with the result that they and the orchestra became the stars of the Apple Music Classical app launch video earlier this year. The pianist then selected a series of solo works to complement the concerto performance, including “Für Elise” and the “Moonlight” Sonata. Beethoven is released digitally on 28 July – together with a “Für Elise” video – and physically on 29 September.

Deutsche Grammophon presents a new album by brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen: Dutch Masters. Not only an ode to the Dutch composers of our time, but especially to pianist and teacher Ton Hartsuiker, who introduced piano brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen to Dutch modern music as children. "Everyone knows Bach, Mozart or Beethoven, but we also have many lesser-known composers from our homeland who have created many beautiful compositions," the brothers say. The album presents a dazzling selection of compositions for two pianos and piano four hands from the 20th and 21st centuries by Dutch composers Louis Andriessen, Leo Smit, Willem Pijper, Jan Wisse, Theo Loevendie, Hans Henkemans and Joey Roukens. In addition, the repertoire includes two works composed especially for the two brothers: "Together" by Theo Loevendie and the piano concerto "In Unison" by Joey Roukens accompanied by the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and their conductor Karina Canellakis. Both these works, as well as the compositions by Jan Wisse and Hans Henkemans, are world premiere recordings.

Markus Maskuniitty’s debut recording together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra together with its chief conductor Sakari Oramo, showcases four concertante works for horn and orchestra covering a period of one hundred years (from 1849 to 1951). Robert Schumann described the horn as the ‘soul of the orchestra’ and he had a profound affinity with the instrument. The most substantial of Schumann’s works featuring the horn is the Konzertstück for four horns and orchestra, Op. 86. Schumann considered the work as one of his best achievements as a composer.
