Frank Lloyd Wright was the greatest of all American architects. He was an authentic American genius, a man who believed he was destined to redesign the world, creating everything anew. Over the course of his long career, Wright designed over eight hundred buildings, including such revolutionary structures as the Guggenheim Museum, the Johnson Wax Building, Fallingwater, Unity Temple and Taliesin. Wright's buildings and his ideas changed the way we live, work and see the world around us.

Mike Doughty has built a successful solo career in the 14 years since his departure from Soul Coughing. In the fall of 2013, after famously eschewing his former band's repertoire for most of his career, Doughty released an album of re-imagined Soul Coughing songs titled Circles Super Bon Bon… (the full title is 41 words long–a list of every song on the album) and toured the US in support of it with Catherine Popper on upright bass, Pete Wilhoit on drums, and Doughty himself on guitar, turntables, and sampler.

The music on this excellent album was created by a highly combustible trio consisting of Ken Vandermark on tenor saxophone and clarinet, Mark Tokar on bass and Klaus Kugel on drums and percussion. This album was recorded at the Alchemia Club in Krakow in May of 2016 and begins with "13 Lines" which blasts hard right out of the gate, with Vandermark's expressive saxophone holding court with the elastic bass and drums.

The single most striking difference between Fred Hess' latest recording and all of his earlier efforts is the relaxed and joyful feel of the music contained herein. Tyranny to form, an element of Hess' recordings that has caught too much of my attention in the past, is gone, amended by said relaxation and joy. This unassuming release documents a substantial step forward in the realization, if not the compositional understanding of Hess' music by other players. He has chosen an outstanding and simpatico group of musicians to share in his musical vision, and that is a big part of the overall genius of this music. Each participant brings a lot to the table.

Praeger | 2007 | ISBN: 0275991806 | 208 pages | PDF | 4 MB

John Lennon was able to fuse experiments in technology, instrumentation, lyrics, and musical form into recordings that were both artistically and commercially successful. Few singer-songwriters have been his equal. In this long overdue investigation, authors Ben Urish and Ken Bielen give Lennon's artistry the opportunity to speak for itself. After a brief biographical introduction, chronologically arranged chapters discuss his incredible body of work album-by-album and single-by-single. A discography and annotated bibliography conclude the book.
