Few bands of the era offered as much variety in material from night to night. King Crimson’s propensity for improvisation & fondness for playing its newest material – often unreleased on record at the time of the concerts - is legendary. Fewer bands still, whether by accident or design, recorded so many of their live shows…

There are so many King Crimson retrospective albums on the market that all but the most carefully attentive fans must to be hopelessly confused. Cirkus, great as it is in terms of content, doesn't help matters any. Pay attention now: whereas 1998's Absent Lovers (also a two-disc live album) documented King Crimson's 1984 tour (in support of Three of a Perfect Pair, the last album the band made before taking a ten-year break), Cirkus includes live material spanning the band's entire career, from its earliest 1969 lineup to its later double-trio configuration.

The Night Watch is a terrific live album capturing the third incarnation of King Crimson - featuring Robert Fripp, John Wetton, Bill Bruford, and David Cross - at the Amsterdam Covertgebouw on November 23, 1973. Some Crimson fans consider this lineup to be the most musically adept in the band's history, and the dense, yet dexterous, playing will tell any curious listener exactly why this is so. It remains an album that will primarily please the diehards, but for those fans, The Night Watch is an essential purchase.

Although their UK Autumn tour consisted of just six dates King Crimson were on stunning form as this great-sounding audience recording demonstrates.Alongside the warmly-received Larks’ Tongues In Aspic material, including a truly blistering Part I, this concert also highlights tracks which would ultimately appear on their next release in 1974.The Nightwatch, Lament, and Fracture, on which you’ll hear Bruford exclaim at almost precisely the same point he would eighteen gigs later at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, had been rolled out in America earlier in the month. It’s interesting to note how well bedded-in the renditions at The Rainbow are, each exuding a devil-may-care insouciance in places.

Esperanto is a language invented in 1887 by Zamenhof, who combined bits of various Romance language to make what he hoped would become a vehicle of universal communication. The Belgo-English band of the same name at the beginning of the 70s had a short but intense career and produced an extremely varied musical repertoire thanks to the many different nationalities, origins and outlooks of its members…

"One" is the debut full-length studio album by UK progressive rock act Cirkus. Formed from the ashes of bands Moonhead and Lucas Tyson, the group's high standard of musicianship was well known in their native north-east where they attracted much attention and had a devoted following. It was felt that the quintet could achieve success on a national scale, provided management handled matters properly and they got the right breaks. In 1973 they recorded their debut album "Cirkus One" at Sound Associates/Emison & Air Studios and just 1000 copies were pressed up.
