Drawn from Sarah Vaughan's first round with Mercury Records (and its EmArcy Records subsidiary) between 1954 and 1964, this fine selection features the singer in a variety of settings ranging from intimate trios to bopping big bands and smooth, silky orchestras, all of it showcasing Vaughan's lush tone and playful phrasing. Among the many highlights are the opener, a strong rendition of a Quincy Jones arrangement of "Misty," a sparkling take on Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" while fronting the Count Basie Orchestra, and a duet on "Always" with her mentor, Billy Eckstine. There is a lot more to the story than this, though, and ardent listeners may want to check out the four-volume (each volume of which contains six discs) Complete Sarah Vaughan on Mercury series, but as a quick single-disc introduction to one of Vaughan's most commercially successful eras, this set will certainly get you started. ~ AllMusic Review by Steve Leggett

The ten CDs are, so to speak, the antidote to our eroticly charged box '' Sex, Drugs And Alcohol '': Absolutely youthful, this new edition is full of romance, longing, love cries and the accompanying drama. The Rockn Roll era, which was otherwise so wild, has given us a lot of memorable love songs, which the young Elvis was so lucky enough to make on his first LP. He is in this box as well as many of his Rock'n'Roll-colleagues, but there are hardly any well-known singers, who have not dealt with heartache and love-passion during their career:

Anna Kolchina's Wild is the Wind is a masterclass in ensemble performance. Backed by pianist John di Martino, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Willie Jones, Kolchina is more an equal quartet member than a singer backed by a trio. This is experienced immediately on the title piece, where Kolchina's delicately-played voice peeks out from behind Washington's gentle bass playing as it directs the remainder of the arrangement. It is a stunningly organic musical effect that increases the intimacy of the performance greatly.

Finland’s Altaria are one of those fourth-tier melodic metal acts I stumbled upon back in the early aughts and took a flyer on. 2004s Divinity had a few worthwhile cuts but was largely forgettable faux-power/hard rock in the vein of Allen/Lande or Eden’s Curse. By the time 2006s The Fallen Empire hit I was less interested in what they were doing and essentially consigned them to the darkest corners of my music collection. I slept on 2009s Unholy and was mildly surprised to see their name emerge from the skunk weeds of the promo sump some 12 years after they last sallied forth. So what does fifth album Wisdom offer the curious listener? The short answer is…not much. This is very mellow, low-key melodic metal verging on hard rock, and much of it is so safe and bland that it’s a challenge to string together 700 words about it. I must do it though. I must, I must, I must, I say!

When jazz vocalist Freddy Cole sings, it's with a built-in groove that's unshakeable, with warm, honeyed tones that wrap the lyrics in velvet and set them down firmly in the pocket. Cole has one great little album here; if you thought it was impossible to produce a modern-day jazz vocal album that's not infused with endless oodles-of-noodles riffing that shows you nothing except the ability of the vocalist to sing everything but the melody, be prepared for greatness. With a small combo led by pianist Cedar Walton and tenor saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr., Cole has a backdrop that never gets in the way of his magic nor does anything that doesn't help the song. Timber-wise, he owes a lot of his phrasing to his older brother, Nat "King" Cole, and Francis Albert Sinatra, but Freddy ultimately remains his own man and that's what makes this album such a success. Ten or 12 stars, at least.
