For most of our history the wealth of a nation was limited by the size and stamina of the work force. Today, national wealth is measured in intellectual capital. Nations possessing skillful people in such diverse areas as science, medicine, business, and engineering produce innovations that drive the nation to a higher quality of life.

Knowledge-based (KB) technology is being applied to complex problem-solving and critical tasks in many application domains. Concerns have naturally arisen as to the dependability of knowledge-based systems (KBS). As with any software, attention to quality and safety must be paid throughout development of a KBS and rigorous verification and validation (V&V) techniques must be employed.

This book presents the fundamentals and advances in the field of data visualization and knowledge engineering, supported by case studies and practical examples. Data visualization and engineering has been instrumental in the development of many data-driven products and processes. As such the book promotes basic research on data visualization and knowledge engineering toward data engineering and knowledge.
