Il film è ambientato in Canada, Niagara Falls, il 4 luglio del 1996. Poco dopo la mezzanotte, attraversando il parco cittadino dopo i festeggiamenti della serata, Teena Maguire e la figlia dodicenne Bethel vengono aggredite da un gruppo di ragazzi. Mentre la donna subisce una brutale violenza sessuale, la ragazzina riesce a nascondersi e a salvarsi. Teena finisce in coma e appena si riprende comincia a combattere per fare giustizia ma i colpevoli vengono assolti. L'agente di polizia John Dromoor decide di vendicare la donna.

Her acting in this film is excellent, but the popularity of the actress was definitely on the decline, so that, after the war, Noris will move away from the screen, except for a few rare appearances.

Il film racconta la storia di Sidonie Laborde (Léa Seyedoux), una semplice serva "lettrice” di Maria Antonietta (Diane Kruger) che, per qualche strana ragione, passa dall’essere nessuno all’avere un ruolo importante a fianco della regina negli ultimi giorni a corte prima che Maria Antonietta, il re e tutti i più stretti collaboratori siano decapitati. La storia è tutta presentata dal punto di vista ingenuo della Laborde che fino all’ultimo momento crede che il re riuscirà, con il suo discorso, a convincere la popolazione.
