As this recital amply demonstrates, Maria Callas encompassed an extraordinary range of roles. She is as convincing in the pinpoint coloratura of Lakmé's 'Bell Song' ('Her chromatic scale is beautifully done and she sails up to the region known as in alt with the greatest ease,' said Gramophone) as in the sweeping, richly coloured lines of Maddalena's 'La mamma morta' from Andrea Chénier, famously and movingly featured on the soundtrack of the 1993 Hollywood film Philadelphia.'There is great tenderness and simplicity, deep emotion,and the most lovely moulding of the vocal phrases,' wrote Gramophone, 'Madame Callas's characterizations… are nothing less than superb, and altogether there is some of her finest singing yet recorded'.

Galina Gorchakova, endowed with what London’s Sunday Times called “one of the most important dramatic voices in the post-war era”, makes her debut on Delos label with Italian Opera Arias, a collection of her signature roles that have earned her critical acclaim and an immense public following the world over. Gorchakova is accompanied by Constantine Orbelian and the Philharmonia of Russia, the Maestro’s own assemblage of Russia’s leading orchestral musicians resulting in la creme de la creme of Russian ensembles.

For her third solo album for Sony Classical, the Operalia-winning soprano, Yoncheva turns her attention to the work of a composer for whom many feel she has always had a special affinity: Giuseppe Verdi. The music of Verdi forms the lodestone of most dramatic-lyric sopranos, and Yoncheva includes arias from some of the composer’s rarely-performed operas in addition to some of the most beloved ones. From the early operas, she sings arias from Nabucco (1842), Attila (1846), Luisa Miller (1849) and Stiffelio (1850). The latter aria is a prayer of forgiveness from a woman, the wife of a pastor, who has been unfaithful. ‘The emotional range of this aria is amazing, and musically it uses the whole voice from high to low- but amazingly it all happens in about two minutes.’

Throughout his life, Carlo Maria Giulini retained his love of Italian opera, which had brought him fame in his early days at La Scala, and which he had reluctantly abandoned later in the 1960s. Here he presents a collection of the most beautiful overtures from the masterpieces of Verdi and Rossini.

Recorded in 1949 when Maria Callas was just 25, this debut recital encapsulates the young soprano's astonishing maturity, versatility and technical finesse. She had already sung all three roles showcased here - Wagner's Isolde and Bellini's Norma and Elvira (I puritani) - in the theatre. As Gramophone, which described the recital as 'incandescent and spellbinding', wrote: 'The Liebestod is a beautiful example of sustained interpretation, with a long line running through the whole piece, each phrase finding part-fulfilment in the next until the climax is reached,' concluding overall that: 'The eloquence of phrase and the technical control put at the service of a discerning heart and mind are obvious to hear'.

For years, the sounds of our instruments – piano and harp – have intermingled every Wednesday in the music school where we teach. We only had one hallway to cross to form a duo … And it was done in 2016 during the teachers’ concert. Thus was born the Duo Emaho (meaning wonder in Tibetan).

Sir John Barbirolli (né Giovanni Battista Barbirolli; 2 December 1899 – 29 July 1970) was a British conductor and cellist. He is remembered above all as conductor of the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, which he helped save from dissolution in 1943 and conducted for the rest of his life.

Ludovic Tézier trained at the Paris Opéra's École d'art lyrique and at the Centre National d'Artistes Lyriques. He was a prize winner at Operalia, The World Opera Competition in 1998.

Pagliacci is an Italian opera in a prologue and two acts, with music and libretto by Ruggero Leoncavallo. The opera tells the tale of Canio, actor and leader of a commedia dell'arte theatrical company, who murders his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio on stage during a performance. Pagliacci premiered at the Teatro Dal Verme in Milan on 21 May 1892, conducted by Arturo Toscanini, with Adelina Stehle as Nedda, Fiorello Giraud as Canio, Victor Maurel as Tonio, and Mario Ancona as Silvio. Soon after its Italian premiere, the opera played in London (with Nellie Melba as Nedda) and in New York (on 15 June 1893, with Agostino Montegriffo as Canio). Pagliacci is the composer's only opera that is still widely performed.
