Any story about Los Lobotomys must begin with The Baked Potato, affectionately known as ‘The Spud’. It’s a jazz club and restaurant located on Cahuenga Boulevard in North Hollywoood, California, in the heart of Studio City. It’s a small and intimate club with a low ceiling and candle lights, serving the unusual combination of jazz music and baked potatoes, and for decades the club has attracted visitors from around the world to experience some of the best musicians around Los Angeles.

Los Lobotomys started as a jam band in 1985 when several top session players in LA (who played with the likes of TOTO, George Benson, Frank Zappa, James Taylor and more) started to jam at the iconic North Hollywood jazz club The Baked Potato. An instrumental band, they played everything from hard rock to be-bop, and always with a strong focus on improvisation on Tuesday nights at The Baked Potato and soon, lines would form outside the club many hours before the show. People from all over the world came to North Hollywood to experience the group and, not least, Jeff Porcaro’s magical grooves. The Los Lobotomys album was recorded live on April 29th, 1989 and features musicians David Garfield (George Benson, Karizma), Steve Lukather (TOTO), Jeff Porcaro (TOTO, Steely Dan), Will Lee (David Letterman), Brandon Fields (Tower of Power), Lenny Castro (TOTO, Rolling Stones), Joe Sample (Miles Davis, Crusaders), Carlos Vega (James Taylor, Karizma) and Vinnie Colaiuta (Frank Zappa, Sting), covering compositions originally done by everyone from Jimi Hendrix to Miles Davis, and has gained somewhat of a cult following among music lovers.

Unless you frequent Los Angeles clubs like The Baked Potato and La Ve Lee, chances are you haven't heard of keyboardist David Garfield. But you've heard him. Appearing on over a hundred albums, Garfield has worked with artists like trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and guitarist Larry Carlton. He's a co-founder of Los Lobotomys and Karizma, two fusion-based jam bands that have included drummers like Vinnie Colaiuta and Simon Phillips, as well as guitarists Steve Lukather and the perennially-underrated Michael Landau. No recording dates are listed on The State of Things, but Garfield's clearly been working on it for years, given that a third of the tracks feature Carlos Vega—a versatile drummer who appeared on literally hundreds of albums before passing away tragically in 1998. This fusion-centric effort features many of LA's best session players, but in many ways it's as much Landau's disc as it is Garfield's. He pays tribute to Jimi Hendrix on a version of "If Six Was Nine that—as blasphemous as this may sound—might actually be an improvement on the original. While his tone says rock, his lines say jazz as he demonstrates complete facility navigating changes on the swinging version of Miles Davis' "Milestones and a more delicate mainstream take on John Coltrane's "Naima. He exhibits his more textural side on "Me and kicks things into extreme high gear on the greasy funk of "Five Storks and the more overtly rocking "Black Cadillac.
