Ils sont nés aux alentours de 1997, année où le Royaume-Uni a rétrocédé Hong Kong à la Chine. Depuis cette date et jusqu’en 2047, la République populaire s’est engagée à maintenir les systèmes économique et législatif ainsi que le mode de vie propres à l’île, à travers la politique "un pays, deux systèmes", qui s’applique dans la région administrative spéciale de Hong Kong. Dans ce paysage, une génération de jeunes gens politisés se fait connaître et dénonce l’autoritarisme croissant de Pékin, qui se manifeste, par exemple, par le refus d’accorder le suffrage universel aux Hongkongais, le fait que les candidats au pouvoir exécutif doivent être adoubés – autrement dit, choisis – par le parti communiste chinois ou encore la tentative d’imposer des cours "d’éducation patriotique" aux enfants.

The film depicts its protagonist, Joseph (Jan Nowicki), traveling through a dream-like world, taking a dilapidated train to visit his dying father in a sanatorium. When he arrives at the hospital, he finds the entire facility is going to ruin and no one seems to be in charge, or even caring for the patients. Time appears to behave in unpredictable ways, reanimating the past in an elaborate artificial caprice.

The movie consist of 13 separate episodes each handling a period between 1960 and 1970. The length of these periods varies from one day to some years. It tells the story of a group of people in Munich (mostly music and film students). Every episode focuses on a different character from the group, although the main storyline and character, the young composer Hermann, continues. The movie tells a story in many different levels about love, friendship, misfortune, loss, art, politics, history with important historic events of the decennium in the background. It was the most costly and ambitious drama production in German television, although very cinematographic. Believed to be partly autobiographic.

"Generation 9/11" is an intimate film driven by the stories and personalities of its protagonists, who were born in the wake of a global tragedy which, for them, was also deeply personal. But it is also the story an entire generation that has been shaped by the attacks and their aftermath.
