Two Women (1960)
Widowed shopkeeper Cesira and her 13-year-old daughter Rosetta flee from the allied bombs in Rome during the second World War; they travel to the remote village where Cesira was born. During their journey and in the village and onward, the mother does everything she can to protect Rosetta. Meanwhile, a sensitive young intellectual, Michele, falls in love with Cesira.

La guerra, che non risparmia a Roma i suoi bombardamenti, induce Cesira, una giovane vedova proprietaria d'un modesto negozio d'alimentari, a cercare rifugio tra i monti della Ciociaria dov'è nata. Sua costante preoccupazione è che alla figlioletta tredicenne, Rosetta, siano risparmiati per quanto possibile i patimenti, le angosce e le sofferenze che la guerra infligge anche ai civili. Ad accogliere le due donne sono amici, parenti e la serenità dei luoghi che sembrano tagliati fuori dalla tragicità di quelle ore.
