This volume offers readers various perspectives and visions for cutting-edge research in ubiquitous healthcare. On February 15-17, 1993, a conference on Large Scale Optimization, hosted by the Center for Applied Optimization, was held at the University of Florida. The con­ ference was supported by the National Science Foundation, the U. S. Army Research Office, and the University of Florida, with endorsements from SIAM, MPS, ORSA and IMACS. Forty one invited speakers presented papers on mathematical program­ ming and optimal control topics with an emphasis on algorithm development, real world applications and numerical results. Participants from Canada, Japan, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Greece, and Denmark gave the meeting an important international component. At­ tendees also included representatives from IBM, American Airlines, US Air, United Parcel Serice, AT & T Bell Labs, Thinking Machines, Army High Performance Com­ puting Research Center, and Argonne National Laboratory.

Parallel Algorithms for Optimal Control of Large Scale Linear Systems is a comprehensive presentation for both linear and bilinear systems. The parallel algorithms presented in this book are applicable to a wider class of practical systems than those served by traditional methods for large scale singularly perturbed and weakly coupled systems based on the power-series expansion methods. It is intended for scientists and advance graduate students in electrical engineering and computer science who deal with parallel algorithms and control systems, especially large scale systems. The material presented is both comprehensive and unique.

This book focuses on computational methods for large-scale statistical inverse problems and provides an introduction to statistical Bayesian and frequentist methodologies. This book focuses on the design of decentralized optimization methods applied to charging strategies for large-scale PEVs in electrical power systems. It studies several classes of charging coordination problems in large-scale PEVs by considering the distinct characteristics of PEV populations and electrical power systems, and subsequently designs decentralized methods based on distinct optimization schemes – such as non-cooperative games, mean-field games, and auction games – to achieve optimal/nearly optimal charging strategies.

A large-scale system is composed of several interconnected subsystems. For such a system it is often desired to have some form of decentralization in the control structure, since it is typically not realistic to assume that all output measurements can be transmitted to every local control station. Problems of this kind can appear in electric power systems, communication networks, large space structures, robotic systems, economic systems, and traffic networks, to name only a few.
