Classical / Neo Romantic / Choral / Suite

The first recording of the oratorio in English. This is so wonderful! I truly enjoy this whole CD. I keep playing it over and over! God in Disguise or A God Disguised (Swedish: Förklädd gud) (Op. 24) is a lyrical suite composed in 1940 by Swedish composer Lars-Erik Larsson to lyrics by Hjalmar Gullberg. The suite is from the composer’s neo-romantic period. It was written for the radio audience when Gullberg and Larsson were both employed by Swedish Radio.

In this highly unusual recording, featuring the double bass as solo instrument, we hear music by the Italian composer Giovanni Bottesini and two Swedish composers - Erland von Koch and Lars-Erik Larsson. Soloist Thorvald Fredin is Professor of Double Bass at the Stockholm College of Music. A breezy presentation of double bass virtuoso Bottesini's second concerto for the instrument, originally written for performance by the composer himself coupled with his Elegia, testifies the present performers' technical mastery and musical understanding of this typically 19th century composition in which no opportunity is lost, in cantelineor runs, demonstrating the soloist's proficiency.

Gold buried deep in the BIS back-catalog since 1980 (but readily available), this CD adds a couple of apt fillers from 1981 to the program of the original analog LP. Larsson’s Pastoral Suite is the best-known music here, and makes a fine overture in its most sprightly recorded chamber performance. The Romance has live intensity, helped by the sound, a classic piece of minimalist work by Bis proprietor, Robert von Bar: just a small Revox half-track reel-to-reel machine, and a couple of mikes above and in front of the conductor. Hans Eklund numbers among the Swedish composers who gained public notice in the 1950s following his studies at the Royal Music Academy from 1947 to 1952 with Lars-Erik Larsson, one of his countrys most popular composers. Although Eklund was one of the very first Swedish composers whose music was performed at the Darmstadt Summer Courses, his music never abandoned tonality. Eklund wrote a total of thirteen symphonies. With the exception of the fourth, all of these works have richly associative Italian titles. His third symphony was inspired by the landscape and folk music of the Swedish island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, while in his fifth symphony he deals with the subversive powers of war. The music sounds grey, sharper, not so smooth rhythmically, and hotter. Although Eklund termed his eleventh symphony of 1995 the Sinfonia piccola, it is ironically one of his longest such works as well as a memorial tribute to his honored teacher Lars-Erik Larsson. The time to rediscover this important symphonist is now!
