Late Night Tales

"Late Night Tales: Django Django" is a mix album compiled by British art-rock band Django Django, released in 2014 as part of the Late Night Tales series. The mix includes tracks from artists such as The Beach Boys, Primal Scream, Outkast, Massive Attack and Philip Glass. It also features an exclusive Django Django cover version of The Monkees’ "Porpoise Song".

Franz Ferdinand are welcomed into the Late Night Tales family with a diverse 20 track selection of musical influences, inspirations, diversions and discoveries. The quartet have released four studio albums including their 2004 self-titled debut album, which went gold just about anywhere with a record store, as well as nabbing the Mercury Music Prize and a pair of Brits for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act. They’ve subsequently gone on to release You Could Have It So Much Better, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand and last year’s Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action.

This July the esteemed scribe, proper DJ, and discreetly deft twiddler Bill Brewster, drops the latest instalment in his ‘After Dark’ series, for Late Night Tales. A throbbing, louche and leisurely affair, groove is very much at the heart of this freestyle selection, a vibe which Bill de- scribes as “a basement, a red light and a sound system. Or, as the Beastie’s once rapped, slow and low, that is the tempo”. There’s Hawaiian drum machine bossa balearica from Island Band, percussive afro post punk from Czech jazz singer Jana Koubkova, and breathy-bubbling-dubwise-slap-bass-soul from Debbe & The Code.

Late Night Tales: Khruangbin is a DJ mix album curated by American psychedelia band Khruangbin for Late Night Tales series, set to be released by Night Time Stories on 4 December 2020. It will include Khruangbin's cover of Kool & the Gang's instrumental tune "Summer Madness". The compilation includes a mixture of various global artists outside of the mainstream music, including South Korean rock band Sanulrim, Belarus band Pesniary, Nigerian musician Maxwell Udoh, and Ethiopian band Roha Band, among others.

Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points music taste is notoriously tricky to define, ranging from ethereal classical at one end to coruscating techno at the other, united only in a firm belief in the transcendental power of music to move hearts, minds and yes feet. Similarly, his production career has ranged from early experiments in dance music with breakout records such as the Shadows EP and collaborating with legendary Gnawa master Mahmoud Guinia to his expansive album Elaenia, which met with critical acclaim upon its release in 2015.

"I wanted to try and showcase as many people as I knew on this mix. My idea of Late Night Tales was to distil a series of relaxing moments; the whole conceptual sonic of relaxation. So, I was trying to think of all the collaborators and friends that I knew, who'd recorded stuff with this horizontal vibe. Plus, I was also trying to help my friends' stuff get into the world. I know the story of Khruangbin blowing up after appearing on the series (in fact, I think that's how I discovered them). So, the main idea was to create a certain atmosphere, but also to help some of my favourite collaborators and buddies to give their songs a little push out into the world. Lets be honest French chill-out masters Air were never going to have any trouble blending a sophisticated mix of mood-enhancing rock and pop for the soul. Opening with All Cats Are Grey by The Cure (from the start of their dark Trilogy Faith: nothing like starting as you mean to go on), it soon swoops into even trippier territory with Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath (from their 1970 album Paranoid) and into Nino Rotas ultra-eery O Venezia, Venaga, Venusia (from the original soundtrack to 76 art-house classic "Il Casanova di Fellini, slowly but surely it takes in tracks from The Band, Japan, Scott Walker and Lee Hazlewood. As melancholic as it is after-dark dreamy, you can rest assured that theres no JLS in the mix here.
